Composed by Martin Lass. Chamber,Children,Classical,Instructional. 43 pages. MA Lass & I Lass #995794. Published by MA Lass & I Lass (A0.1414027).

Martin Lass is an Australian violinist, composer, arranger, and teacher. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing.

Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra
was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.

The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.

This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,†is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.

Paying tribute to great artists like Dick Dale, The Ventures, and Jan and Dean, here is an exciting, fast-paced piece in the style of classic 1960s surf rock. Easy eighth and quarter note rhythms and a focus on the first and second finger patterns make it approachable for beginners, and it's a fun way to apply lessons in reading G string notes. The optional drum kit part adds flair to the rock style. (1:45) This title is available in SmartMusic.

But what if you could control the performance of a live orchestra as they're playing with a remote control? That's the idea behind this hilarious new novelty piece. With the click of a switch (or, in this case, the sound of a bell), the orchestra switches from piece to piece in mid-phrase. Listen as Eine Kleine Nachtmusik changes to Beethoven's Seventh to Stars and Stripes Forever and back again! Your audience will love it as they surf from channel to channel, including brief stops at the Opera channel and the Sci-Fi channel! This remote even has a pause button that freezes the orchestra, and a mute button that keeps them playing, but with no sound! Great fun for everyone! (3:00).

SKU: A0.990569

Composed by Flint Juventino Beppe. Contemporary. Score and parts. 54 pages. The FJB Fingerprint #3029577. Published by The FJB Fingerprint (A0.990569).

Op.66 is dedicated to Sir James Galway, and was first performed in Washington D.C. on the 5th of October 2006 by Galway and the National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Leonard Slatkin (Alto Flute version).

Version for Flute in C, Op.66b, first performed in 2008 by flutist Judith Hall, harpist Willy Postma and the Pluri_Art Festival Orchestra, conducted by Viacheslav Valeev. UK premiere in 2009 by flutist Emily Beynon, harpist Catherine Beynon and the Philharmonia Orchestra, conducted by Vladimir Ashkenazy.

A piano reduction is also available (Op.66c).

In order to achieve the best results of the use of divisi, it is recommended to have a minimum of string players available:

Violin I - 8 players

Violin II - 8 players

Viola - 6 players

Cello - 5 players

Contrabass - 3 players

Bigger string groups are preferable.

Fermata duration is meant to constitute an addition of half of the duration of the note. E.g. a fermata over a quarter note should have a duration of a quarter note / rest + a eighth note / rest.

«Whilst this is instantly attractive, melodic music, if one looks under the surface one finds so much more. There are many attractive depths to this atmospheric music.» The Classical Reviewer (UK)

About Pick-A-Part Arrangement

This arrangement system employs simultaneous, multi-level difficulty parts for each string section. The goal is to accommodate all levels of playing in the preparation and performance of a symphonic masterwork.

In this arrangement, there are 3 difficulty levels for each individual string section, labeled A, B, and C, respectively. Each level is a decreasing level of technical and musical difficulty, level A being the highest level of difficulty. The A level is close to, if not exactly the same as, the original string part, plus the integration of wind parts when applicable. B and C follow in a proportional reduction of difficulty level.

For this solution to be most effective, some students should be encouraged to play the most challenging parts simultaneously with those playing the simpler parts. This presents the opportunity to participate in a performance that includes most of the original material. The B and C parts cover enough of the surface material while maintaining a modicum of independence from the A part. In other words, the B and C parts are able to hold their own in performance without the A parts.

For example, let’s say you have a couple of talented violinists and a few more that are well below their playing level, only two violists that need a great deal of help, a plethora of cellists with a wide range of abilities, and one single bass player that is a beginner. Your distribution of parts may look something like this:

    • Violin 1 - two on Violin 1A, one on Violin 1C, and the rest on Violin 1B
    • Violin 2 - one on Violin 2B, the rest on Violin 2C
    • Viola - both on Viola C
    • Cello - three on Cello A, one on Cello B, and the rest on Cello C
    • Bass - one on Bass C

This potential setup will challenge each player at their current level of development while creating the context for a moving experience with a major orchestral work.

A Note about the Score and Printing

The full score is designed to be printed in portrait orientation on 17x11 tabloid size paper. Even at this size, the score can be confusing to read, especially if you are not covering every difficulty level part. If you would like a custom score showing only the parts you are using, please email me: conductor@grantgilman.com. I will be happy to work with you!
