Detáche and whole bowing.  Technique: Position:violin/viola-1st position (viola half pos.), cello- 1st and extended position, bass- half, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3 1/2 position. Bowing: Slurs, Richochet   Keys: G, C, F/d, Bb/g, Eb/c, A/f#, b, e, a Rhythm   Time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 6/8   Notes/Rests: whole, eight, dotted half, sixteenth, dotted quarter & eight,  eighth & quarter triplets Concerning the Double BassMy experience as a classroom teacher and a bassist has convinced me that a beginning bassist develops best in a heterogeneous string class when playing the same contour as the other instruments. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.

His plan was to premiere the piece with his group (he was teaching at Garden City Community College at the time) that next fall. Unfortunately, the strings program was cut at the end of that semester and he never had the chance program the piece. It was premiered in May of 2013 by the Tabor College Symphonic Orchestra under my direction. It was inspired by the painting Twisted Ironies, a beautiful portrayal of a tornado, which was given to the composer as a gift by the artist. The drum set part was added at the suggestion of a string teacher in the community. The piece alternates dramatic lyricism with driving string and percussion statements. There is an optional first violin solo as well as a drum set solo, which will add some flair to you concert!

String Orchestra - Digital Download SKU: A0.811671 Composed by GORDON DALE 1935 - 2001. 20th Century,Concert. Score and parts. 6 pages. Piper Publications #3436789. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811671). Gordon wrote the Hymn Symphony for the Hereford String Orchestra in 1977. They gave the first performance in Hereford and also performed it at Gordon’s memorial service in 2001. The symphony is composed in the Classical style, the themes being mostly well-known hymn tunes. The rest are Dale originals which just sound as if they should be hymn tunes. (People have made thorough searches without success.) There are four movements and the piece lasts about twenty minutes. THE SCORE AND EACH PART ARE AVAILABLE SEPARATELY. Gordon was a good violinist. He played in the CBSO where he also doubled as their solo alto saxophone player when required. He was a very popular violin teacher. He wrote pieces for his pupils from beginners to advanced much of which can be found on the Piper Publications web site.

Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck was a Dutch organist and composer who lived from April 1562 to October 16, 1621. He was born and died in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Sweelinck's first published works date from around 1592-94, and he composed a variety of music, including chansons and keyboard music. He was known for his keyboard playing and was a teacher to German composers Samuel Scheidt and Heinrich Scheidemann.  Sweelinck's Echo Fantasias are significant for several reasons:Innovative composition: Echo Fantasias were a unique form of composition during Sweelinck's time, blending elements of traditional fantasias with passages dedicated to echo effects. This experimental approach showcased Sweelinck's creativity and willingness to push the boundaries of musical expression. Emphasis on the moment: Unlike Sweelinck's larger fantasias, the construction of Echo Fantasias was less strict, focusing more on the immediate musical experience rather than the overall design. This emphasis on the moment allowed for greater freedom and spontaneity in the performance of these pieces. Stylistic range: Echo Fantasias encompassed a wide range of styles, juxtaposing fantasia-like elements with passages dedicated to echo effects. This stylistic diversity added depth and complexity to Sweelinck's compositions, making them engaging and intriguing for both performers and listeners.

The piece begins with unison ideas (pitch, rhythm and bowing), then begins to expand, encouraging each section to gain some independence. We reset, and expand further. This process continues until the contrapuntal lines create complex harmonic textures that travel in unexpected directions, yet make musical sense. Much like an individual’s own journey, the path taken is not always direct and clear, but the end result is musically satisfying.Significant attention music be placed on dynamics throughout.From a technique standpoint, this work asks the most of the bass section. The shifting requests in the other sections are minimal, although there are sufficient opportunities to shift should student and/or teacher choose. Bow placement and control, tone production and ensemble balance are where much of the focused work will be required from students.
