String Orchestra - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.808194 Composed by Mark W. Huxhold. Instructional. Score and parts. 68 pages. Mark Wayne Music, LLC #3489363. Published by Mark Wayne Music, LLC (A0.808194). Developed by a String Specialist for the String Specialist by Mark W. Huxhold (Who's Who Among America's Teachers- 2000, 2005, 2006) I developed this method over a 20 year period as a school orchestra teacher faced with ever diminishing classroom instructional time. My goal was to preserve and articulate the scope and sequence of the curriculum in a concise and efficient manner. This method is intended to foster music reading skills from the beginning when used in conjunction with teacher initiated rote and modeling teaching techniques.  Book 2 continues in standard portrait format at 100% scale. Curriculum Scope & Sequence Prerequisite: Book 1 or 1st position (bass 1st & 3rd pos.) on A and D strings. D major, Common time. Eighth, quarter and half notes. Detáche and whole bowing.  Technique: Position:violin/viola-1st position (viola half pos.), cello- 1st and extended position, bass- half, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 3 1/2 position. Bowing: Slurs, Richochet   Keys: G, C, F/d, Bb/g, Eb/c, A/f#, b, e, a Rhythm   Time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 6/8   Notes/Rests: whole, eight, dotted half, sixteenth, dotted quarter & eight,  eighth & quarter triplets Concerning the Double BassMy experience as a classroom teacher and a bassist has convinced me that a beginning bassist develops best in a heterogeneous string class when playing the same contour as the other instruments. This is achieved by introducing the bassist to 3rd position when the other instruments learn C# and D on the A string. I do advocate marking 3rd position on the fingerboard. Another benefit is that the bassist is able to develop good tone production and intonation more easily on the higher 2 strings.

String Orchestra - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.996559 Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by Michele Winter, mwmusicworks.com. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 30 pages. MWMusicWorks.com #5316093. Published by MWMusicWorks.com (A0.996559). This arrangement for Grade 3.5 string orchestra is set in D major-up a half step from the original. The dynamics are Fauré’s. The bowings and articulations are editorial. The arrangement uses Fauré’s four vocal lines (SATB) and the harmonium part without its running triplets. Although the triplets have been left out, the harmonies and the cantabile character remain intact and convincing. None of the string parts go beyond 1st position, but players need to be familiar with extensions and unusual accidentals. Bow control and vibrato will contribute to a mature sound and help to dramatize the forte passages. This piece is perfect for concerts, festivals, and community events that require deeply moving music.  Share Fauré’s glorious French romantic harmonies with your students and their audiences.

Musically the Battle of Trenton is a good level of difficulty for 7th and 8th grade orchestra students.  It includes dotted rhythms with hooked bowing, triplets, grace notes, staccato, and a section in d minor.  The optional advanced violin part has notes up to 5th position.  The piece can be staged with appropriate uniforms and flags of the Hessians and the Americans.  This is a great interdisciplinary project combining history, music and theater.  In social studies classes, middle school students study the American Revolution, especially the battle of Trenton.  The score is 20 pages.  The parts total 26 pages (advanced violin, violin 1, violin 2, viola, 'cello, bass, percussion, timpani and narrator.
