Composed by James Nathaniel Holland. 21st Century,Broadway,Contemporary,Musical/Show,Opera. Score and Parts. 146 pages. James Nathaniel Holland #877732. Published by James Nathaniel Holland (A0.1286698).

INDIVIDUAL INSTRUMENTS PARTS 2 of 2 (Harp and Strings).  This four act contemporary opera, original libretto and music, by 21st century American composer James Nathaniel Holland is the story of the triumph of Love over Evil, however delayed, and the power of keeping steadfast to one’s righteous promise.

Based on the German fairy tale The Six Swans, in a kingdom, during Saxon times, the murderous daughter of an evil entity, Ravia, infiltrates and takes over the lives of a royal family due to the King’s rash promise to marry her many years before.

The royal children are sent away by their father for safety to a hidden, woodland cottage, but Ravia discovers where they are and hexes the younger siblings, turning them into swallows.  Usha, the eldest, escapes and flees to the wilderness and is visited by the apparition of her dead mother who explains what is going on and that Usha must swear an oath of silence for six years to break the spell and change her siblings back into human form.

Five years pass and a dashing and kind king, Rohric, of another kingdom, finds Usha while hunting, falls in love with and marries her, but Usha must remain silent and cannot reveal who she is.  Ravia, who now is sole queen of the old kingdom, is invited by Rohric’s nobles with hope to secure a “proper†wedding for Rohric.  Usha is accused falsely of killing her own child by the two and is sentenced to be burned at the stake, but as the bell tolls she finally can declare her innocence.  To the crowd’s amazement her siblings change back, all truth is revealed, and for Ravia’s failure, she is dragged back to hell by demons.

Singers:  King Alfred (bass), Ravia (soprano), Princess Usha (mezzo), Queen Mother Arna (soprano), the royal siblings (children’s/boy’s chorus), King Rohric (Tenor), The Evil Noble (baritone), An angel/a demon (bass), SATB Chorus

Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by Regis Bookshar. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and parts. 31 pages. Regis Bookshar #6537751. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813844).

Largo (from Symphony No. 9 in E minor) (From the New World) (Db) (String Orchestra) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (23 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.

Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.

Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:

I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.

He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:

I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.

In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.

Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.

The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, he has created this version for a String Orchestra. Parts included with the purchase are a 1st Violin, a 2nd Violin, a 3rd Violin, a 1st Viola, a 2nd Viola, a 1st Violon.

Children (and adults) who learn a musical instrument will always progress at different rates. Students also develop some of the many skills involved in instrumental playing faster than other skills.

The Mixed Abilities School Ensemble Series for Easy String Orchestra has the flexibility to allow pupils of different standards to play together in one ensemble (up to five parts).

Each piece has a total of 5 different parts which are fully interchangeable between violins, violas and cellos (double basses can double the cello parts). So whether you have 15 violins and a viola, or 3 violins, or 4 cellos or whatever, the pieces will still work well together. All parts are provided for all instruments.

Part 5 uses long notes on open strings. The other parts gradually increase in difficulty up to Part 1, which uses first and second positions. The teacher should select appropriate parts for the players in the group.

I GOT THE BLUES is the second piece in this series, and uses typical Blues characteristics such as syncopation and swung quavers. It also includes a section in which any player can improvise; suggested notes to use in the solo are provided along with backing figures.

Please listen to the mp3 file, which is an electronic example of the piece being played with 4 violin parts and a cello on Part 5.

The purchaser of this product may print as many copies of the parts as required in order for the piece to work successfully with the ensemble. They must not copy, print or distribute the score or parts for others who have not purchased the product independently.

1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments

If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!

The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

·     Choose a tempo.

·     Choose a dynamic.

·     Choose an articulation/style.

One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.

If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

The variations are endless!

If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.

All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!

Enjoy!

Combine these with the set for Band when used for Full or Chamber Orchestra.

Link to complete recording: https://soundcloud.com/geoffrey-peterson/sets/the-edmund-fitzgerald-concerto On November 9th, 1975, the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald left port in Superior, Wisconsin. The 729-foot-long iron ore carrier, loaded with 26 thousand tons of taconite pellets for the auto industry, was bound for Detroit. Earlier that day, the weather service had issued a gale warning. This was not unusual, considering that gale storms are typical during November on Lake Superior. The Fitzgerald’s Captain, Ernest McSorley, and her 29-member crew headed northeast unaware of the maelstrom they would soon encounter. At around 2 a.m., Bernie Cooper, captain of the Arthur M. Andersen, another freighter which was following a few miles behind the Fitzgerald, radioed Captain McSorley to consult with him about the worsening storm. They had both decided to take a more northerly route along the Canadian shore, which they hoped would provide some shelter from the violent gale winds and waves. The Fitzgerald’s long-range radar stopped working the following day and was needed in order to avoid Six-Fathom Shoal, a shallow area of Lake Superior that could rupture the ship’s hull. McSorley soon radioed the Anderson to report that the Fitzgerald had sustained some topside damage...a fence rail down, two vents lost or damaged, and a starboard list. A list meant that the Fitzgerald was taking on too much water and was causing it to lean to one side. The short-range radar also stopped working, and the radio direction beacon from nearby Whitefish Point vanished. This would make it impossible for the Fitzgerald to reach the lee waters of Whitefish Bay and escape the 80 mph winds churning 20 to 30-foot waves. At 7:10 p.m. that night, First Mate Morgan Clark of the Andersen radioed the Fitzgerald to see how they were doing. Captain McSorley replied, We’re holding our own. This was the last contact anyone would have with the Fitzgerald. Shortly thereafter, the Edmund Fitzgerald disappeared from the Anderson’s radar screen. All 29 of her crew were lost on November 10th, 1975. The Edmund Fitzgerald chronicles the tragic final voyage of the well-known shipwreck in 4 movements; Embarkment, The Gales, Six-Fathom Shoal (We’re holding our own.) and Entombment-Dirge. The concerto makes use of several musical quotes. The first is Spanish Ladies, an English sea chantey, which appears in both the 1st and 3rd movements. The second is the funeral march theme from the 2nd movement of Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony which is heard in the 4th movement of the concerto. In addition, a chime is rung 29 times during the final bars of the concerto to memorialize the men who lost their lives. The Crew of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald: Michael E. Armagost, Frederick J. Beetcher, Thomas D. Bentsen, Edward F. Bindon, Thomas D. Borgeson, Oliver J. Champeau, Nolan S. Church, Ransom E. Cundy, Thomas E. Edwards, Russell G. Haskell, George J. Holl, Bruce L. MY QUARTET VERSIONS, in short notice work fine for solo, two parts and three parts

however I also offer individual versions for one, two and three parts that are more detailed for these ensembles.

If you can’t find a title then contact me through www.baysbest.com/smp-arrangeme/ and I’ll give you the link back to Sheet Music Plus’s listing.

VERSATILE Titles that include four parts are written with the idea that they can be performed with 1, 2, 3 or 4 musicians. Most of the contemporary/popular titles include a chord chart for a bass instrument.

PRACTICE needs would vary according to the level of the performers but my goal is to be sight-readable for most performers and groups.

AUDIO SAMPLE The 30 second mp3 is frequently shortened and may not start at the introduction to get to the reprise. The actual introduction will be in the sheet music.

LISTENABILITY I have performed thousands of weddings and special events. I make it a goal for the music to carry as well as possible through loud and large space situations.

ARRANGEMENTS usually follow the original version. There is an mp3 where you can hear 30 seconds and get a feeling of the originality of the work.

EXCELLENT for corporate events, weddings, social gatherings and recitals.

APPROPRIATE for students and schools.

CHURCH REPERTOIRE I’m always adding more titles.

Scherzo for Double Bass and String Orchestra/String Quartet  ‘Tembo’

The bass instruments are sometimes overlooked when it comes to solo repertoire so ‘Tembo’ is a fun piece designed to feature the bass.

Tembo is an African word for elephant and this piece was inspired by the famous bass solo ‘The Elephant’ from Saint-Saëns’ ‘Carnival of the Animals’

This arrangement for bass and string orchestra/string quartet allows the bass to shine over the whole range of the instrument in a playful way as indicated by the term Scherzo.

Parts included in the download:

D. Bass soloist
1st Violin
2nd Violin
Viola
Cello
D. Bass (optional)

Sea chantey’s sometimes spelled shantey’s were songs that were played or sung aboard ships so men could work together doing the everyday tasks such as raising and lowering sails raising and lowering anchors, loading or unloading cargo. Ships had a “shanteyman†whose job it was to lead the men in song. There were often specific songs for each task. These wonderful melodies have found their way into the realm of folk songs today.

Composed by Matt Arnett. Classical,Contemporary. Score and parts. 8 pages. Matt Arnett Music #684841. Published by Matt Arnett Music (A0.1080623).

This is a really fun piece that will challenge but be achievable at the end of the first year. Everything stays in standard 1st position fingerings with mostly stepwise motion with skips to open strings, though there are a few quicker notes to challenge the left hand. There's a lot of interplay between the high and low voices, which gives each section the opportunity to work on listening to the whole ensemble and counting through rests. Rhythms will be mostly straightforward for this level, with one syncopated example at 24 - I like to teach this rhythm with the text Pass the tasty chocolate chip cookie. Last, there's some fun unusual techniques, including a glissando in the cello/bass and the instructions to Start high on the (E/A/D) string and play 8 notes, each lower than the last for upper strings. These should be kept random, chaotic, and fun. I hope your students enjoy The Gladiator!

By Simon And Garfunkel. By Paul Simon. Arranged by Laura Gorden. Folk,Instructional,Pop,Rock. Score and Parts. 21 pages. Laura Gorden #830843. Published by Laura Gorden (A0.1235307).

This arrangement for string orchestra is based on the cover that Disturbed performed on the original Simon & Garfunkel song The Sound of Silence. The arrangement includes the score and parts around Grade level 3-3/12. This score provides educational opportunities for young orchestras with specific concepts such as syncopated rhythms, mixed meter of 4/4 to 2/4, divisi parts, shared/passing melody across sections, and very specific dynamics to create balance.

This arrangement is the whole song, all of the versus, and the words to the song are included in score and parts when that specific instrument has the melody to help with rhythm reading as well as to provide the option to teach parts with singing them. There is shifting in the violin 1, viola and cello parts. Due to the nature of the members of Disturbed vocal range, the cello has the melody most often. Hope you enjoy this arrangement!

In the echoes of history, where the ravages of war leave indelible scars on the fabric of humanity, there emerges a haunting melody that seeks to articulate the unspeakable pain and devastation wrought by the shadow of falling lead. The Shadow of the Falling Lead is a musical composition born out of a deep and poignant reflection on the profound impact of bombing during wartime.

As the symphony unfolds, it endeavors to traverse the emotional landscape of those whose lives have been forever altered by the relentless rain of destruction. Each note serves as an empathetic brushstroke, painting the canvas of despair with the hues of sorrow, resilience, and the human spirit's enduring will to survive.

The title itself evokes the grim reality of warfare, where the shadow of falling lead becomes an ominous specter, casting darkness over the lives it touches. This composition seeks to transcend the boundaries of language, inviting listeners to immerse themselves in the somber beauty of the music and connect with the shared humanity that unites us all.

As we embark on this musical journey, may The Shadow of the Falling Lead serve as a solemn reminder of the cost of conflict and the imperative to strive for a world where the echoes of such devastation become but distant memories, replaced by the harmonious chords of peace and understanding.

A solo violin ends this journey as a mother lamenting for her lost children.
