Composed by An-lun Huang. 20th Century,Classical,Contemporary,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score and parts. 32 pages. DoReMi Edition #653394. Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1049001).

Chinese Rhapsody No.3 was composed e in Toronto, Canada , 1988. Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. The attached mp3 was performed by the German saxophonist Jurgen Demmler with pianist Peter Grabinger in 1996. Duration: 20’.

This arrangement of a traditional Chinese tune is written for String Orchestra plus one or more flutes and one or more clarinets. The arrangement is attractive enough for public performance but it is written at a level suitable for training students of an early to intermediate level of playing ability. The string parts are straightforward and suitable as a student introduction to orchestral playing. (There is no double stopping. Viola parts and cello parts are entirely in their home clefs.)

Composed by Gang Chen and Zhanhao He. Arranged by Lyris Pat. 20th Century,Multicultural,Romantic Period,World. 17 pages. Lyris Pat #1031690. Published by Lyris Pat (A0.1452599).

The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto (Liang Zhu ??) is a beloved concerto that features traditional Chinese folk tunes written in the Western orchestral idiom.  This rendition has taken the main tune from the first movement and abridged it to fit into a short 5 minute stand alone piece.
This arrangement is for 2 advanced solo violinists, optional guzheng, harp, or piano, and an intermediate student string orchestra.  The 2 solo violin parts here are symbolic of Zhu Yingtai (???), the story's protagonist, and of Liang Shanbo (???), her lover. The first movement describes Zhu’s road to Hangzhou for her studies. As a young woman she is forbidden to attend school so she becomes disguised as a man.  She meets Liang for the first time and their passionate journey begins, first as a sweet friendship and then finally as a tragic, forbidden love.
