Written for the Hilliard Ensemble and the strings of the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, the composer sets two texts from St. Columba about the power of the human voice. The work is divided into two parts in line with the texts, with string orchestral episodes preceding each. Despite some divisi in the string writing, The Voice of St. Columba promotes the clarity and directness of the texts through its simplicity. Part one, “Colum’s Voice�, is a description of the extraordinary physical and magical power of St. Columba’s voice, and its revelatory qualities are observed in part two, “On Hinba�.

This work has already been performed by the children's orchestra that I direct and the result was amazing. The work employs the total management of all the strings of the instruments of the string orchestra. Its orchestration is wide, allows to integrate students of different levels in a single orchestra through the voices that are written as for example violin one, two and three. All the musicians will have a place in the orchestra. The voices one are the most complex and the two are an easy reduction for beginning students.

On the recording, the first 20 bars look like Yo-Yo Ma plays all the different voices with just his cello. In the arrangement that we present here, we have distributed the voices to the different instruments of the string orchestra (violins, viola and cello) and added the solo VIOLIN part (violin version). The string orchestra was written based on the recording. You and your ensemble will love to play this beautiful song in this arrangement that we made completely based on this recording. Enjoy!

A musette is a bassline that typically uses alternating low and high octaves to keep the underpinnings of a melody moving right along. Here we have that broken octave figure split into two voices, the cello and bass. Thus, no one section has to keep alternating up and down. The tune is a Shubertian sort of easy-going, elegant song. It is harmonized with as much color as the basic scalar melody can absorb, without getting too radical in its tonal range. The final section uses two dotted quarters in each measure instead of three plain quarter-notes. Bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. Running time at the suggested tempo is 3 mins. The piece CAN go faster should your group be up to that task! Remember, ALL notes are in 1st position for all sections, no trills or fast passages across strings, all standard up and down bowings, no pizzicato or divisi. Makes a nice opening piece, or the end of the first section of a two-part program. MBB.

Song Of The Liberty Bell for violin and string orchestra was composed and orchestrated by Mark O’Connor and used as the theme song for the critically acclaimed PBS documentary, Liberty! The American Revolution. O’Connor wrote the piece to include three different instrument groupings - unaccompanied solo, folk ensemble, and string orchestra. The Sony Classical album Liberty! features Song Of The Liberty Bell in all three arrangements. Album notes author Thomas Fleming calls the music profoundly moving with exquisite melody. Fleming further describes the orchestral version - O’Connor joins in, and the instruments of the symphony pick up the theme. It is a musical replication of the way the voices of liberty in 1776 began with a lonely defiant few - and then swelled to a tremendous national chorus that has resounded through the world for the next two hundred and thirty-three years. The music is suited for all levels.
