Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,� is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.

In order to capture the attention of the diverse types of learners in my orchestra I composed this piece with the intention of the students writing a background story (or liner notes) for the work. Using familiar themes from the French tune Il est né le Divin Enfant (in a minor key) and a portion of the Irish ballad Star of the County Down I created an interesting pirate sounding shanty. The title, Ghost Ship’s Call, is a guideline for this write your own adventure piece. The students can explore different ideas for the harmonic and melodic changes in the music.

Johann Strauss, who at that time was giving a summer season of concerts in nearby Pavlovsk, used the opportunity occasioned by the event to enhance his already enviable popularity with the Russian royal family and composed the Caecilien-Polka in honour of the lovely young bride. Indeed, it is clear from a letter which Johann wrote in late July 1857 to Carl Haslinger, his publisher in Vienna, that the new polka had been prepared well in advance of the wedding (the fair copy of the full orchestral score made for the publisher's engraver is dated 9 August) and was enjoying success even before the royal couple's official engagement on 16August 1857. Sometime after performing the Caecilien-Polka in Pavlovsk, Johann despatched the work to the Austrian capital where his brother Josef conducted its Viennese première, together with that of Johann's waltz Telegraphische Depeschen (op. 195, Volume 28), at his own benefit concert in the Volksgartenon Sunday 18 October 1857. The Intermezzo was a character piece from the Romantic Period which often took a specific musical idea, and created a bittersweet, elegiac mood, similar to the feeling evoked by a Nocturne. This piece takes the interval of a 6th and weaves it through several configurations to create this same feeling in the first offering from the GateWay Editions First Position String Orchestra Series. A Brahmsian feeling predominates throughout. At 5 mins 30 secs duration, this all-first-position piece makes an excellent concert feature for the ensemble that is finding its voice, but may not yet be up to the level of multi-position full-fledged classical string music. The tempo is stately without being draggy, the mood is somber but not dark, and tuneful without being busy or meandering. The key signature of one sharp makes this nicely adapted to teaching and performance by students, while the rich writing makes it quite presentable to an adult concert audience.The bowings are by string pedagogue Lori Sandell Lacey. The PDF provided here is a score, and a single part for each section. Multiple printings of each part, as needed for your ensemble, are permissible, of course. There are NO notes out of first position, or outside the range of the second year of string pedagogy, the basses having a bit more need to move up 1/2 position for each string. n There are no trills or fast passages across strings. All parts have standard up or down-bowing, no advanced bowings or pizzicato. Audio is at prescribed tempo, faster or even a bit slower are also reasonable interpretations. MBB.

The hike takes the trekkers higher and higher until a vast and wonderful vista is encountered. From there, the trekkers return the way they came.

Ukrainian and Soviet composer, Viktor Kosenko (1896-1938), was a highly regarded concert pianist, concertmaster and educator. Kosenko began his formal training at the St. Petersburg Conservatory as a composition student of Mikhail Sokolovsky. While in school he served as concertmaster of the Marinsky Theatre. Aleksandr Glazunov, the Director the Conservatory, was greatly impressed with Kosenko and spoke highly of his work.  Regarded by his contemporaries as a master of lyricism, his first compositions were markedly influenced by the works of composers such as Rachmaninov, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky and his fellow Ukrainian Mykola Lysenko.  During his short career he composed over 100 works for piano in a total of about 250 musical works. Other works include his symphonic Moldavian poem, choral and folk music arrangements, violin and piano concertos, trios and string quartets. During the 1930s Kosenko became dedicated to writing music for children. His first compositions for children were Four Children’s Pieces for piano (1930; this arranger has scored these four works for violin and piano, flute and piano, and cello and piano, as well as string orchestra). I wanted to write a companion piece for Tiger Dancing, which was written for the choreographer Henri Oguike and his company. Although Eternity's Sunrise was written for the concert hall rather than the theatre, dance is a pervasive feature of the music, the ensemble plays almost throughout in rhythmic unison. The opening burst sets the stage for what follows and makes a short final return as a coda. The work last about sixteen minutes. Steve Martland. The work has a powerful impact on both players and audiences, it's high-voltage music requireing real stamina from the performers. Audences at the premiere and subsequent tour loved it and the work would make marvellous dance music. The title of this piece comes from lines by the visionary English poet William Blake: He who binds to himself a joy Does the winged life destroy; But he who kisses the joy as it flies Lives in eternity's sunrise. Incidentally, this poem was on Stockhausen's desk for most of his working life, and his death occurred as Steve was writing the piece.

These studies are specifically designed for non-professional orchestras, although any orchestra will improve by playing some of these pieces during rehearsals. It is always necessary to pay attention to intonation and many other aspects of orchestral performance.In addition, these studies are also useful for orchestral conducting students. For example, it is essential to know how to conduct a simultaneous attack of a chord that does not begin on the first beat, but a eighth note after the third beat.I began writing these studies around 2013, when I took over the direction of the Bremer Orchestergemeinschaft and noticed the complete absence of repertoire of this kind. As a pianist, I am accustomed to studies by Carl Czerny or playing scales. Each individual instrumentalist knows studies of technique for their instrument. However, there are no, or at least I am not aware of, similar studies for orchestral performance technique and the specific difficulties of ensemble playing that it requires. The cycle Orchestraining aims to fill this gap.The third Etude focuses on Spiccato and is therefore only for strings.
