The goal is to accommodate all levels of playing in the preparation and performance of a symphonic masterwork. In this arrangement, there are 3 difficulty levels for each individual string section, labeled A, B, and C, respectively. Each level is a decreasing level of technical and musical difficulty, level A being the highest level of difficulty. The A level is close to, if not exactly the same as, the original string part, plus the integration of wind parts when applicable. B and C follow in a proportional reduction of difficulty level.  For this solution to be most effective, some students should be encouraged to play the most challenging parts simultaneously with those playing the simpler parts. This presents the opportunity to participate in a performance that includes most of the original material. The B and C parts cover enough of the surface material while maintaining a modicum of independence from the A part. In other words, the B and C parts are able to hold their own in performance without the A parts. For example, let’s say you have a couple of talented violinists and a few more that are well below their playing level, only two violists that need a great deal of help, a plethora of cellists with a wide range of abilities, and one single bass player that is a beginner. Your distribution of parts may look something like this: Violin 1 - two on Violin 1A, one on Violin 1C, and the rest on Violin 1B Violin 2 - one on Violin 2B, the rest on Violin 2C Viola - both on Viola C Cello - three on Cello A, one on Cello B, and the rest on Cello C Bass - one on Bass C This potential setup will challenge each player at their current level of development while creating the context for a moving experience with a major orchestral work.  A Note about the Score and Printing The full score is designed to be printed in portrait orientation on 17x11 tabloid size paper. Even at this size, the score can be confusing to read, especially if you are not covering every difficulty level part. It is a mash-up of several traditional Christmas carols, Good King Wenceslas, Jingle Bell, Jolly Ol' St. Nicolas, Deck the Halls, Coventry Carol and We Wish you a Merry Christmas. In the middle of the piece, each string section plays a different melody at the same time. Under all that noise a solo cello will start to play The Coventry Carol and after a while, everyone stops and listens to the cello's melody. Eventually, everyone all joins in playing that tune. And it ends with We Wish You A Merry Christmas. This is a great piece for your Winter Concert.

Published by Keith Terrett (A0.746694). Arrangement of That's a Plenty for String Orchestra. That’s a Plenty arranged for String Orchestra, is a 1914 ragtime piano piece composed by Lew Pollack. Lyrics by Ray Gilbert (born 1912) were added decades later. A number of popular vocal versions have been recorded, but the tune remains more performed as an instrumental. The composition started out as a rag, but is nowadays played as a part of the Dixieland jazz repertoire. The song has been recorded by numerous artists, and it is considered a jazz standard. The first recording was in 1917 by Prince’s Band, and the New Orleans Rhythm Kings recorded their rendition in 1923.Television comedian Jackie Gleason used it in his shows in the 1950s and 1960s. Among the hundreds of later recordings of this standard, particularly notable versions include: Freddy Martin and His Orchestra recorded a version of That’s A Plenty in 1950. Sheet music from the 1950 version featuring Freddy Martin on the cover has the lyrics printed inside. It was recorded by Albert Nicholas, clarinet, with The Big Chief Jazz Band in Oslo on August 29, 1955. Released on the 78 rpm record Philips P 53038. The Pollack and Gilbert song is not to be confused with a 1909 song of the same name by Henry Creamer and Bert Williams. He is most well known for his performance career as a classical crossover and popular music artist with 11 CD recordings, numerous awards and accolades, and performances with the likes of Luciano Pavorotti, Julio Iglesias, and Joan Baez. Before this, he was a founding member of the Australian Chamber Orchestra, as well as playing with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra. When he is not spending time with his wife of 46 years, his three middle-aged children, and his two grandchildren, he spends his time and energy teaching, writing, arranging, and performing.Five Australian Scenes for String Orchestra was conceived with specific iconic Australian places in mind, as well as with the intention to convey the experience of these places programmatically through the music. From this point of view, the pieces could have just as successfully been called Australian Days. As such, each piece represents a kind of day journey in microcosm, like a travel diary set to music. The points of interest in each day are indicated sequentially in the music.The pieces were written with the intermediate student string orchestra in mind. As such, they explore a wide variety of string techniques, dynamic and tonal contrasts, styles, and moods. Although the writing never takes a student out of first position barring a few cello passages, and the fingering avoids the use of cello forward extensions and minimises high 3s for the upper strings, the technical, rhythmic, ensemble, and intonational challenges put these pieces at the intermediate level. There are ossias and other alternatives for greater challenge or greater ease. Fingering has been offered where appropriate. And bowing has been meticulously indicated.This particular piece, “A Day at the Beach,� is set in Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD. On a perfect summer day, one heads for the beach where fun and games, swimming, surfing, sun-baking, a picnic, and more games are the order of the day before heading home, full of sand, sun, food, and tired satisfaction.

Published by John T Sarno (A0.904424). This is a fun piece for an intermediate-level string orchestra. It is the third arrangement of mine that is a mash-up of traditional Christmas carols. This arrangement features religious Christmas carols. Included are: Angles We Have Heard on High; God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; Away in a Manger; Cradle Song (Away in a Manger); Joy to the World; In the Bleak Midwinter. In different places in the piece, different string sections play different melodies at the same time.  There is a triangle part to be played as a fun part. There is a Flute solo, but it can be played on any C instrument. More instructions are given at the end of the score for how these parts should be played. While it is mostly a pizzicato piece there are some bowing sections. It also gives the player a challenge to play pizzicato while holding the bow in certain sections. Starry Night for a Ramble was popularized in Victorian London by singer and Shakespearean comic Samuel Bagnall in 1873.  Although an earlier edition from Scotland exists suggesting it was written earlier and perhaps by someone else. Later it was adapted as a popular fiddle tune which is still heard at contra dances today, either as a jig or a waltz.  This arrangement for mandolin orchestra incorporates the salubrious tune as both a waltz and a jig on a meandering ramble through various keys.

Bull's reputation rests on his extensive compositions for virginals and organ, some 150 extant pieces published in Musica Britannica.
