Belgian cellist Guillaume Paque was born in Brussels on 24.7.1825; he died in London on 2.3.1876. From 1835 onwards he studied with Francois de Munck at the Conservatoire in Brussels, where he went on to play cello in the royal theatre. After working in Barcelona for some time as a teacher and cellist at the Italian Opera he moved to London in 1850, where he played as principal cellist at the Theatre Royal and taught at the Royal Academy of Music. Paque published twenty-six works with Schott including salon music, virtuoso showpieces, cello arrangements of Schubert songs and operas by Mozart, Rossini and Verdi – and his well-known cello quartet ‘Souvenir de Curis’ (Schott CB 145). Romance et Tarantelle op. 23 is an effective concert piece that was published in 1874 (plate number 21153).

The original version for cello and piano was my first formal composition when I started composing in 1998. When my brother, Ralph, heard it, he cried and said that he wished that my parents could have heard it, too. The form and harmonies of this piece are mostly traditional, but there are a few surprises. There is a cantorial cello cadenza. A trumpet and tuba are added to the usual chamber orchestra with piano, just to play an Oh My Darling Clementine counter-melody in one variation but flute and bassoon have cues and can do this nicely. The recording of the beautifully expressive performance by Ken Hoppe and the College of Marin Symphony conducted by Tara Flandreau (who edited the string parts) is of such poor sound quality that I have uploaded the computer playback as the sound clip, which is of course quite mechanical sounding. The repertoire in Book II chosen by L.A. Cellist Wendy Velasco from the works of Barbara Arens moves beyond the first four positions and is intended for students in Suzuki levels 4-6. Technical challenges include: fast string crossings, the introduction of tenor and treble clefs, thumb position, big chords and asymmetrical rhythms. There are three jazzy pieces to develop a feel of swung eighth notes, along with racy pieces like 'Salamanca' and 'Rondo alla Tarantella', 'Twilight Tango', and, the composer's personal favourite:'Variations'.  Each piece has preparation exercises by Wendy Velasco explaining how to approach the technical and musical challenges.
