Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James Guthrie, ASCAP. Concert,Halloween,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 59 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306357. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551511).

1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain King

Grieg Background

In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and BedÅ™ich Smetana in Bohemia.

Legacy

Grieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)

Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.

Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary

It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Composed by Franz Liszt. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. Holiday,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 20 pages. Jmsgu3 #4592271. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.550051).

Widely recognized recital piece. Dreams of Love - perfect for Valentine's Day.
Franz Liszt's Liebestraume is a set of three published in 1850. The word Liebestraume is German for Dreams of Love, each of the three pieces is based on a poem about love and death. The third piece, Liebestraum No. 3, is the most popular and is split into three sections, each divided by a fast cadenza requiring a high degree of technical ability. The melody throughout the piece is the same, but each time, it is varied, especially near the middle of the work, where the climax is reached. The article is meant to be played briskly, with emotion, and is inspired by or reminiscent of night. The poem that inspired Liebestraum No. 3 is about unconditional mature love, expressing the extent of the speaker's love through the sacrifice he's willing to endure. The piece is a crucial example of program music because it references poems about love and death.

Franz Liszt's Liebestraume has influenced many composers, including:

Richard Wagner: Liszt's compositions, including Liebestraume, influenced Wagner's music, particularly his operas.

Hector Berlioz: Berlioz was a Liszt contemporary influenced by his music, including Liebestraume.

Camille Saint-Saëns: Saint-Saëns was a French composer influenced by Liszt's music, including Liebestraume.

Sergei Rachmaninoff: Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer influenced by Liszt's music, including Liebestraume.

In summary, Liszt's Liebestraume has influenced music by being a perfect example of romantic and program music, inspiring emotion, and is considered one of the most beautiful and romantic pieces ever written.

Antonín Leopold Dvořák (1841 – 1904) was a Czech composer. Dvořák frequently employed rhythms and other aspects of the folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia, following the Romantic-era nationalist example of his predecessor Bedřich Smetana. Dvořák's style has been described as the fullest recreation of a national idiom with that of the symphonic tradition, absorbing folk influences and finding effective ways of using them.

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ander. Classical,March,Opera,Romantic Period. Score and part. 5 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #836536. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1241140).

This arrangement adapted for violoncello and piano was written keeping the characteristics of the original work, that is, inspiring and significant to the already known choral symphony by Beethoven, indicated to be performed by young music students, who want to enter the symphonic music, moreover, it can also be used by professional musicians, for recitals, repertoire, academic presentations and didactic material. As much as it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion. The transcription is faithful to the structure, with only one change in key, so that it is comfortable for all instruments in the formation, thus maintaining the essence of the striking melody, as well as using it for ensemble practice among musicians of different traditions.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony Op. 125 incorporates part of the poem An die Freude (To Joy), a hymn written by Friedrich Schiller, with the text sung by soloists and a choir in its last movement. It was the first example of a major composer using the human voice as prominently as the instruments in a symphony, thus creating a far-reaching work that set the tone for the symphonic form that was to be adopted by Romantic composers. This is the last complete symphony composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. The choral symphony, better known as the Ninth Symphony or The Ninth, is one of the best known works in the Western repertoire, considered both an icon and predecessor of Romantic music, and one of Beethoven's great masterpieces, where it was first performed on May 7, 1824, the same year it was completed, at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna, Austria. The conductor was Michael Umlauf, the theater's music director, and Beethoven - dissuaded from conducting by the advanced stage of his deafness - was given a special place on the stage next to the conductor. It was later rearranged by Herbert von Karajan to become the anthem of the European Union in 1972, the national anthem of Rhodesia from 1974 until 1979, Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia, used the tune Ode to Joy.

Composed by Ludwig van Beethoven. Arranged by Ander. Classical,Instructional,Opera,Romantic Period,Traditional. Score and part. 7 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #806004. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.1207894).

This adaptation was intended for a small group of violoncello and piano, where the original essence of the piece was kept, however, with a reduction in the duration, where only the main themes of the opening were extracted. As it is simplified, it is intended for beginner students of instrumental music who want to enter orchestral music, even in a simplified and reduced form, and can be used by music teachers with their students in ensemble practice in situations such as academic recitals, didactic concerts, or assessment tests.

The Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, known as the Symphony of Destiny, by Ludwig van Beethoven, written between 1804 and 1808, is one of the most popular and best known compositions in the entire repertoire of European music. The four movements are characterized by orchestral homogeneity, being, at the same time, an example of alternation: the first movement, revealing great tension, denounced by the strings and raised to an extreme drama; the second movement reveals solemnity, in a funeral march that rises by its emotion and beauty; the third movement, a crispness; the fourth movement expresses triumph and magnificence.

Composed by Erik Satie. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Schott Music - Digital #Q21309. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q21309).

The music scene took notice of Erik Satie (1866-1925) all of a sudden: The world premiere of his ballet 'Parade' on 18 May 1917 [siehe dt. Text!] caused quite a scandal. The production which involved Sergey Diaghilev with his 'Ballets Russes', Pablo Picasso (scenery and costumes), Jean Cocteau (story) as well as Léonide Massine (choreography) divided the music scene of Paris, yet made the composer widely known. Satie who hardly had had any solid musical training and lived in Paris for almost all his life developed a new musical style, in deliberate rejection of the 'Wagnérisme' of his time. Classical form models, new harmonies, stylistic ease, meditative and clownish elements amalgamated in an original way, the perfect example being his '3 Gymnopédies' of 1888 the first of which was here arranged for a solo instrument with piano accompaniment: Thus, it is now possible, even for non-pianists, to play this famous miniature by Satie. Thanks to its easy playability, it can also be used for educational purposes.

Composed by Heinz Holliger. This edition: Sheet music. Cello Library. Downloadable. Duration 22 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q16462. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q16462).

In 1853 Robert Schumann composed five piano-accompanied cello romances. The works were never published though as Clara Schumann destroyed the unpublished manuscript in 1893, 40 years after they were written. In his six duo pieces for violoncello and piano, Heinz Holliger refers to these compositions which turned to ash: the title is a combination of the French words ‘romances’ and ‘cendres’. Many allusions are hidden in the music itself. In the opening procession part, for example, one can hear Clara Schumann’s initials C and eS [E flat], a letter of Brahms to Clara is recited by the piano, and the last figure of the final part is formed from the tones of his place of death, EnDEniCH. But both amateur and experienced listeners will at once be gripped by Holliger’s music. This work is affecting – not only by its complex conception but mainly by its intense sonority.
