KPHMS 'Solo' Collection

He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is a ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, the song became a worldwide hit for The Hollies later that year and a minor hit for Neil Diamond in 1970. It has been recorded by many artists in subsequent years.

Scott and Russell were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate on the song.

This is an arrangement as a solo with piano accompaniment that I would judge to be around Grade 5/6 standard for most instruments.

From Handel's famous Messiah, this piece 'For Unto Us A Child Is Born' is originally a choral composition, and it was tricky to arrange this piece for just one cello and a piano, but I think I have managed to form an arrangement that works well between the parts, and maintains the depth of sound that you have with four singers performing the piece, even though now it is just one cello.  I have been really enjoying Handel's music recently, so here is a continuation of my Handel streak.

Pioggia d’Aprile is a caprice-study for cello and piano by Italian cellist and composer Carlo Alfredo Piatti (1822-1901). It masterfully describes the somber falling of Spring rains, before a final opening towards a brighter sky and a colourful rainbow. 

The cello part is certainly challenging but, at the same time, it provides a great chance for the cellist to practice thumb position and articulation of the left hand, and bow-length discipline and weight management of the right hand. 

This Urtext edition is made up of a full score [10pp.] and a separate cello part [4pp.].

The first cello Suite by Johann Sebastian Bach is, possibly, the most well-known and played piece of the cello repertoire. Many composers have felt the need to add a piano accompaniment to these already perfect gems, often resulting in dull harmonisation exercises. This is not the case with Carlo Alfredo Piatti’s accompaniment, where many choices are clearly personal and original. This editions includes a full score and a solo part with Piatti’s fingering and bowing suggestions, while the Critical Notes explain Piatti’s source management.

This arrangement of This Is Halloween from The Nightmare Before Christmas is perfect for the beginning cellist. The melody is abridged to avoid tricky modulations and has been transposed to the more manageable key of A minor. It can be played entirely in 1st position and requires the use of some extensions to reach G#. The piano accompaniment sparsely doubles the melody and includes a fun glissando at the end. Thoughtful bowings and dynamics have been included throughout. This makes an excellent addition to your fall/holiday repertoire!
