The Sonata, in six movements, is the direct outcome of Peter Maxwell Davies’ encounter with the ‘pievi’ – early medieval rural churches – of Tuscany. He writes: ‘In particular, it was inspired by the elusive and enigmatic nature of the imagery of their stone carvings. I have concentrated on just one image, that of the snake, which in Jewish and Christian tradition is a symbol of temptation and betrayal, and of sinfulness in general. However, in the pievi, older significances, which can be traced back to Estruscan times, can be discerned, and these meanings, quite contrary to the usual readings, are now beginning to be fathomed, helping us to understand for instance why the piece of San Vito in Corsignano has no stone carving apart from decorative elements, and that of small, extended snakes.’ (Peter Maxwell Davies)

Inspired by the first of J.S. Bach's unaccompanied six cello suites, CONTINUO is an imaginative take to de-construct Bach and give it a modern face-lift. CONTINUO transforms Bach’s harmony into an electrifying song which with every repetition takes the music into a higher level and eventually climaxes with a cello cadenza at the end (improvised by cellist Adrian Daurov). Its steadfast driving force gives the impetus to keep the crescendo of our lives going, never stopping or pausing, even in dire circumstances. The high-spirited brio of the coda reinstates the powerful strive for life with almost frenetic vigor.

Preserving the passionate romantic atmosphere, this Duo version demands great technical and musical professional ease for both instruments, in order to achieve a complete and transcendent musical experience for both the soloists and their audience.
