Three movements from these two sonatas became part of the cello literature due to an arrangement by Alfredo Piatti(1822-1901). Piatti's arrangement, while extending the literature for cello, took considerable liberty with the material. The three movements of the Locatelli-Piatti sonata are originally movements from the two Locatelli violin sonatas arranged in this edition for cello and continuo. Piatti's arrangement used the second and third movements of the Sonata in D Major, Op. 6 No. 6 , and the first movement of the Sonata in D Minor, Op. 6 No. 12.

Pietro Antonio Locatelli (1695-1764) was an Italian composer and violinist who moved to Amsterdam in 1729. He was a virtuoso violinist, and his compositions are all concertos, sonatas and violin caprices. The twelve violin sonatas of Opus 6,1 published in Amsterdam in 1737, are considered to be among Locatelli's best works.

The sonatas of Opus 6 generally follow the pattern found in No.6: a three movement scheme with a slow first movement, a fast middle movement, and concluding with a third movement set of variations, often on a minuet theme. No. 12 is a surprise, having five movements the last of which is a Capriccio, a predominantly solo movement subtitled Prova del intonatione.

The Sonata, in six movements, is the direct outcome of Peter Maxwell Davies’ encounter with the ‘pievi’ – early medieval rural churches – of Tuscany. He writes: ‘In particular, it was inspired by the elusive and enigmatic nature of the imagery of their stone carvings. I have concentrated on just one image, that of the snake, which in Jewish and Christian tradition is a symbol of temptation and betrayal, and of sinfulness in general. However, in the pievi, older significances, which can be traced back to Estruscan times, can be discerned, and these meanings, quite contrary to the usual readings, are now beginning to be fathomed, helping us to understand for instance why the piece of San Vito in Corsignano has no stone carving apart from decorative elements, and that of small, extended snakes.’ (Peter Maxwell Davies)

The autograph of this sonata, composed in 1789, was initially extant in Bückeburg under the title of 'Sonata per il Cembalo o Piano-Forte et Violoncello obligato' but was lost in the Second World War. The version then published was merely a substantially revised version which had been transposed to D major. Our new edition reconstructs the work's original state (in A major), taking the common performance practice principles of articulation and dynamics into account. A wistful 'serenade' for cello and piano. The gentle melody that weaves its way through the 'A' section becomes suddenly more restless during the 'B' section before returning to 'A' in a new key (Tempo Primo, ma appassionato). Just as the passion subsides a bit, 'B' returns with the same urgency as before, growing more intense as the final iteration of the 'A' section, in a new key, asserts itself (fortissimo), gradually subsiding to pianissimo as the piece comes to a tranquil close. Sonata for Violoncello and Piano was written especially for cellist Emil Miland. As a performer, Mr. Miland has frequently appeared with many of the world’s finest singers, and his playing for me has always embodied many features of vocal technique, including a special kind of portamento, and varying speeds of vibrati. To that end, I fashioned in this piece long, arching melodies that are unabashedly lyrical and romantic in character.

The first movement, marked Allegro Moderato Appassionato, is cast in an expansive sonata-allegro form, and its trajectory unfolds with bold, sweeping gestures. Though firmly in D Major, the entire melodic and harmonic texture of the movement is highly chromatic, giving the musical character a sense of heightened inflection and intensity. -David Conte

Joseph Reinagle (1762-1825), pupil of the well-known cellist Johann Georg Schetky, was a versatile musician and composer. In 1800 he published 'A Concise Introduction to the Playing of the Violoncello' from which the three movements of the Sonatina have been taken. With its appealing melody and classical style, this music closes a major gap in the beginner's literature as there are hardly any easy-to-play classical sonatas for cello and piano. Reinagle's Sonatina is highly recommended for pupils' concerts and competitions since it is played exclusively in the first position. The musical text is based on the text of the first edition, using the original bowing and phrasing. Dynamic indications have been added by the editor as suggestions for lessons.

There are composers about whom nothing or only little is known, who are only known through their works or even through one work only. Luigi Carvelli is one of them: He lived in the second half of the 19th century and died after the turn of the century. Carvelli is supposed to have been a hornist in the area of Torino/Milan and played at the world premiere of Verdi's 'Falstaff'. The only extant work is his 'Serenata Napolitana' – a delightfully catchy and melodious little piece, ideal as a little performance piece for lessons or as an encore, as a special treat after a major sonata programme.
