Today he is known as the teacher of Sir Thomas Beecham and also through the legendary performances of his Étincelles by Vladimir Horowitz. From 1897 until his death in 1925, he lived in Paris, having neither success nor money. His Guitarre is one of two piano pieces Opus 45 and has been subject to various arrangements for strings. Cellist Martin Rummel in his transcription adds some virtuoso touch to Moszkowski’s own version for cello and piano, as previously done by Gregor Piatigorsky.

The result is an interesting crossover effect between jazz music and traditional sonata form, a rewarding concert piece with many different characters and ingredients: a bit of bebop, a touch of Latin and tango, some cool jazz, a hint of Stravinsky and much more. All these elements are treated equally and make this jazz sonata a suitable piece for the concert hall and the jazz club alike. An interesting addition to the repertoire for open-minded cellists.
