Belgian composer and cellist Louis Jean Marie Baerwolf (Barwolf) was born in Bruges in 1841 (his exact date of birth is unknown) and died in Brussels on 12.1.1899. He first studied violin, cello and piano at the Conservatoire in Liège – and also played the organ in his native Bruges. From 1862 he studied at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels. After completing his studies, he was employed for many years at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where his brother Jean worked as a conductor; from 1889-1898 he worked as librarian at that theatre. Baerwolf composed primarily church music, including a Requiem, several masses and motets; he also wrote songs, chamber music and a Cello Concerto op. 48. Two of his compositions for cello and piano were published by Schott: a Mouvement perpétuel op. 66 and our choice, the melodic Morceau de Salon op. 54, which makes a good encore piece. It was published by Schott in 1873 as plate no. 20831.

In 1882, Tchaikovsky considered creating a concert suite out of numbers from his marvelous ballet Swan Lake, which he had composed six years previously. However, he seems not to have made a final decision, and the authorship of the concert suite published after his death as Op.20a is unknown.

In this arrangement for cello with piano accompaniment we have the most famous number of the suite: Waltz (Valse). It is suitable for any occasion: repertorie, classroom, recital or for an impressive and wonderful encore.

Mélanie Hélène Bonis, known as Mel Bonis (21 January 1858 – 18 March 1937), was a prolific French late-Romantic composer. She wrote more than 300 pieces, including works for piano solo and four hands, organ pieces, chamber music, mélodies, choral music, a mass, and works for orchestra. She attended the Paris Conservatoire, where her teachers included Cesar Franck, Ernest Guiraud, and Auguste Bazille. the piece consisted of 3 movements.

This is just one of more than 300 compositions from her ouevre. Originally, it is composed for violoncello and piano, but the majority of cellists seem not to care very much about its existence... and we, double bassists are missing so badly such great sonatas -Božo Paradžik
