About The Piece
Furgary was written in October 2019 at the request of Flautist Gary Woolf for his junior music school orchestra, the Banda Di Musica, for whom I have written many pieces. It was originally scored for a trio of soloists (flute, cello and piano) and string orchestra, like a kind of concerto grosso. In this form there are two school orchestra arrangements;

No. 1 – School Arrangement – Solo flute, cello and piano, Violins 1,2&3, cellos 1&2

No. 2 – Standard Arrangement – Solo flute, cello and piano, Violins 1&2, violas, cellos and basses.

There are also two further arrangements;

No. 3 – Cello and piano – First theme only

No. 4 – Violin and Piano – First theme only.

1992 – The Mini Concerto For Alex, for solo cello (about grade 6 or 7) and school orchestra was commissioned in 1992 by Ibstock Place School for a talented young cellist, Alex Hunt, who was a student at the school at the time.  The Head of the school’s music department was Chris Artley, who was a marvelous support to me, throwing my way many wonderful opportunities or orchestrate for the Ibstock Place orchestra. The Mini Concerto For Alex is just one example. Chris is now a very successful composer living and working in New Zealand!

Duration: approx. 10 minutes.
In one movement, this piece is light in character and great fun for a school orchestra with a young, aspiring cellist.

In 1983, my friend and colleague Arnt Martin made me read and listen to a most interesting piece of music for soprano, viola d'amore and strings, this work called my attention to the viola d'amore. In the following year, I became more and more absorbed in the possibilities this instrument offers and in 1985 decided to write a morceau d'ensemble including a viola d'amore. Thus birth was given to Mysterion, a composition for which these five musicians seem tailormade. As to content, Mysterion represents a reflection on death. Passing through various stages, the music describes a path up to the mysteries of Redemption. Volker David Kirchner.

The piano quartet 'Lost traces' is based on the piano trio Distant traces in which the violoncello had been replaced by a viola, a fact that is highly unusual for the genre. Whereas the first version was meant for a concert in Hamburg in memory of his former composition teacher György Ligeti who had died in 2006, the English title of the new version in standard instrumentation may also be meant literally: a distant search for traces and an homage set to music.

Volker David Kirchner’s works encompass every genre; in addition to numerous compositions for musical theatre and for orchestra, this viola player who formerly played in orchestras and chamber ensembles still shows a preference for composing chamber music. Yet even in this field of “pure, absolute� music, Kirchner’s work has a theatrical quality which shows itself very clearly in his choice of titles (e.g. Mysterion, Il canto della notte, Lamento d’Orfeo, Exil). In this Quintet Kirchner manages to use the various possible combinations of the different instruments to create highly expressive music.
