This iconic spiritual is well suited to the cello, an instrument with a depth of tone and a warmth of sound. While the piano mainly accompanies the cello, it does have a share of the melody, this enables the cello to have an expansive counter-melody running in counterpoint (measures 13 - 19). Were You There? is one of the most well known African-American Spirituals, and this arrangement for cello and piano will be a worthy addition to any High School, College or church music program. Especially suited to the Easter season but also able to be used throughout the year in worship services and recitals.
