Composed by Ruggiero Leoncavallo. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. 19th Century,Romantic Period. Score and part. 10 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #1071645. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1495081).

When Leoncavallo’s beautiful solo piece Brise de Mer (“Sea Breeze”) was first published in Berlin in 1906, he was already an established opera composer, largely due to his first opera Pagliacci, which had become an international success. An Impromptu is an informal piece usually for solo instrument. This French word can be translated loosely as “off-hand” and it’s used to describe relatively short pieces which sometimes have a partly improvised style, a simple structure and an emphasis on melody. Piano pieces entitled Impromptu first appeared in the early 19th century and remained popular for decades.

This is a simplified edition of the piece edited by Colin Kirkpatrick. The work has been transposed down to D major from the original E major. The cello part remains unchanged and the bowing and phrasing are identical to the original edition. The music uses the entire cello range in both bass and tenor clefs and the highest note is the high D above the tenor staff (D5). This note appears only twice in the entire piece. The piano part has been simplified by reducing the number of notes in many of the chords, especially those played by the left hand. This is a lovely cello piece which deserves to be heard more often, with its lyrical melody, elegant changes of harmony and contrasting moods. It would make an excellent item for a cello recital.

And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year.

This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring.

And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.

Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:

Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).

The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).

Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)

There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation.

By Sharon Wilson. By Traditional. Arranged by Sharon Wilson. Children,Christmas,Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score and part. 8 pages. Sharon Wilson #4638867. Published by Sharon Wilson (A0.565496).

Here is a festive duet arrangement (for CELLO solo with PIANO accompaniment) of the popular English carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas. The CELLO leads with the melody for most of the song except for 4 measures during the second time through the chorus where the PIANO takes the lead with the melody. This arrangement begins with the PIANO playing mellow broken chords, then for the second verse, the PIANO adds a bit of syncopation creating a fuller, upbeat sound for the remainder of the piece.

All notes for the CELLO are playable in the first position making this arrangement an excellent choice for early-intermediate string players. The PIANO accompaniment is written for an intermediate player. This quick-paced and bright arrangement will be a valuable addition to your holiday repertoire.

The purchase price includes a 5-page combined score with both CELLO and PIANO parts on each page plus a separate 1-staff score for the CELLO solo (2 pages).

This arrangement is one of the 10 songs in the collection Holiday Classics (A Collection of 10 Easy Cello Solos with Piano Accompaniment).

Lady Gaga - for Brass?!! Really??

This is a great song and works really well as an instrumental solo for brass instruments. It comes from the 2018 remake of the film 'A Star is Born' and is sung originally by Lady Gaga.

I was asked to do an arrangement of the song for a young lady to sing with Boobs & Brass. I was struck by the quality of the words and the music and immediately thought of it as a great addition to the solo repertoire.

In terms of standard, I would judge this to be around Grades 5 to 6 ABRSM/Trinity and makes for an interesting challenge away from the grading syllabus.

Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by David McKeown. Classical,Concert,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. David McKeown #4403670. Published by David McKeown (A0.587613).

Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.

This version is arranged for Solo Cello and Piano and the performance time is around three and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and interchangeable. Repeats may also be ignored. Both the full length youtube performance and the short audio sample are from the Clarinet version off this arrangement.

The solo part is intermediate level, while the piano accompaniment suits an advanced intermediate player. Both will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with building dynamic range and stamina.
