This beautiful evening hymn is a perfect pairing of a solemn, contemplative melody with uplifting, scriptural lyrics that remind us of the hope we have in Christ, in this life and the next. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much! However, I felt that a minor melody would suit it in a really special way, so I rewrote it with new choral harmonization using a mixture of minor modes to match the evening mood of the song. This piece works well as a choir anthem for evensong, funerals, or for any more contemplative, low-key service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. Completed in 1824, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is one of the composer’s most famous works and is frequently performed by orchestras and choir around the word. It is notable for several reasons including being completed at a time when Beethoven was almost completely deaf, and being the first time a major composer had used voices in a symphony. Much like his earlier works, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony would become a highly influential and popular piece of music. The text ‘Ode to Joy’ (‘An die Freude’ in the original German) is adapted from the ode written in 1785 by German poet and playwright Friedrich Schiller, and features prominently in the final fourth movement. This arrangement of the ‘Ode to Joy’ theme, for solo piano, is perfect for beginners who would like to perform this well-known piece. The right hand is solely in 5 finger position, with the left hand having a slightly wider, but easily manageable range. Fingering suggestions have been made, but as always, they are only a guide and performers should use suitable fingering for them. Ideal for absolute beginners, pupils preparing for their ABRSM prep test or early grade exams (Initial Grade, Grade 1, Grade 2), or anyone looking for an accessible, but pleasing arrangement of this excellent piece. What inspired this arrangement is a fondness for extending harder repertiore to the students at lower levels, by making some of the rhythms less complex than those of the original pieces. This is to ensure that the tradition of passing on classical music (and all other forms) is carried on throughout generations. This piece has many of the fast eighth note passages in both hands somewhat broken down into slightly larger rhythm durations so that the young student or performer can play it without too much difficulty. There is also a bit of dynamic contrast thrown in throughout to introduce the player to different expressive text. Below is a brief legend of some of the terms and symbols used in this arrangement.
