Jerome Kern’s first big hit (with Herbert Reynolds), this number from the 1914 Broadway musical, “The Girl from Utah,� helped change the trajectory of American love songs away from European influence (waltzes, flowery lyrics) and more toward the musical styles of the time. Its 4/4 meter shows influence of the American musical styles of the era (ragtime, fox trot) as well as a move toward American vernacular lyrics. It also became a World War I anthem, but has continued to be popular and has appeared in films and been recorded by many over the years (Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Harry Bellafonte). a.k.a. “We’ll Never Tell Them.� Lyrics included for singing along.

Published by Roger Brian Evernden (A0.910399). 116 was written for my mum and dad. At the time I was living in Virginia in the USA, and I was expecting mum and dad to come and visit for a holiday. Due to an unexpected illness they didn't make it. I wrote this tune for them on the day I found out that they wouldn't be visiting. It's called 116 because that was the number of our family home - 116 Hillside Avenue, in Southampton in the UK.It's a jolly melody, with some classical runs, followed by a dramatic twist in the second section. The first section has a simple bass line and structure that is fun to improvise over - when I play it the 2nd and 3rd repeats are always a bit different each time.

This next part is copy and pasted from my blog: My inspiration for The pianist's Wind Chimes came mainly from Philip Glass. The Philip Glass Etudes are kind of short, but I've been listening to them recently. They are somewhat profound even though they are brief and not that advanced. Of course a piece does not have to be long or hard to be profound. The Minimalist style is a great way for beginner and intermediate piano students to sound excellent at piano recitals. I usually don't think about the title of a piece first. The title came to me as I was working on it. Funnily enough, the title might be the worst part of this piece. I only used the name The Pianist's Wind Chimes because I thought it was a cool name (ha ha ha!). In the middle of The Pianist's Wind Chimes, there is a reference to Beethoven's Fur Elise. The famous first two measures of Fur Elise were part of my inspiration. The notes are sort of different. I didn't want to copy Fur Elise completely. But I did want to make the reference obvious enough. I do wander how many people will recognize the reference. I hope most of them will.
