Instead of saying I like that A G# G on top of an Am7 chord. That's a very good start, but it is even more amibigous (and therefore all-encompassing) to say, I like that 8 7 b7 on top of a i7 chord. The second way is better for composing because now you understand that sound in every possible context, which in turn adds that composing trick to a fluent part of your musical language.

I hope that caught your attention!  Just like the Cows Eat Grass song was to help beginner students to learn the spaces of  C Position in the bass clef, Dog Food is designed to help remember the two lines in that position: D and F! I found that teaching the lines of the bass clef as Good Boys Deserve Fudge Always was always being confused with Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.  So with the help of some of my first students, we came up with the saying, Grandma Buys Dog Food Always because Grandma's puppy needs to be fed and Grandpa is out tending the cows (who eat grass!).  So the lines we use in C Position are Dog and Food.  Just as in Cows Eat Grass we had visual cues in each space, Dog Food uses a picture of a dog and a picture of his food for each note.  Students have great fun with the different combination of notes and rhythms and will have an easy time remembering the names of these two lines.
