The two pieces, Partante pour La Syrie and Hirondelle are arrangements for viola and piano of composed by Hortense de Beauharnais who was Emperor NapolÃ©on's step daughter.She married the Emperor's brother, Louis NapolÃ©on. Their son was NapolÃ©on III who, when he was made emperor made Partante pour La Syrie, France's national hymn before it was later replaced by the Marseillaise. The Partante pour La Syrie, Hortense's most popular work, was quoted by Camille Saint-Saens in 'Fossils' in his Carnival of the Animals. Hirondelle (Romance) is a beautiful slow sustained piece. Both pieces are suitable for players of early intermediate standard.

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835 – 16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist of the Romantic era. Saint-Saëns was a musical prodigy; he made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas.

This delightful short work works well as a lyrical exercise, as well as being able to fit into any recital situation.

How Beautiful are the Feet is one of the best loved arias from G F Handelâ€™s oratorio The Messiah. This version is arranged as a solo forÂ ViolaÂ with piano accompaniment.

The original 1741 version of The MessiahÂ presented How Beautiful are the Feet as a duet for two altos and choir,Â but in 1749 Handel revised the piece as a solo aria for soprano. This revision forms the basis for this arrangement. The text is taken directly from the book of RomansÂ in the New Testament.

Felix Mendelssohnâ€™s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeareâ€™s famousplay, Midsummer Nightâ€™s Dream. When Queen Victoriaâ€™s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.

This version is arranged for Solo Viola and Piano and the performance time is around three and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and interchangeable. Repeats may also be ignored. Both the full length youtube performance and the short audio sample are from the Clarinet version off this arrangement.

The solo part is intermediate level, while the piano accompaniment suits an advanced intermediate player.Both will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest.
