Nimrod, is the ninth of the Enigma Variations composed by Edward Elgar in 1899.  Here, the music is arranged for solo Viola and Piano, directly from the orchestral score. Elgar wrote fourteen variations on a theme, each one depicting close friends and family. Nimrod represents his publisher and friend Augustus Jaeger. The biblical character of Nimrod is described as a mighty hunter, and jaeger means hunter in German.

The single pdf file contains both the piano score and a separate solo instrumental part.

Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. Both parts require dramatic dynamic contrasts and lyrical legato playing. The overall performance time is around three minutes.

In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sir Edward Elgar in 2007, I was able to celebrate one of my favorite composers with transcriptions of the ninth (and probably the most famous and best-loved) variation, Nimrod, from his orchestral work, ENIGMA VARIATIONS - My Friends Pictured Within. Here is an additional transcription for Viola and Piano. In the opening bars, Elgar suggests the slow movement of Beethoven's Pathetique sonata. Download includes part and score.

Sir Edward William Elgar (1857 - 1934) was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for violin and cello, and two symphonies. He also composed choral works, including The Dream of Gerontius, chamber music and songs. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.
