Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.778007 Composed by Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897). Arranged by Kamada, Mikio. Romantic Period. Score and part. 5 pages. ACORDO Sheet Music #4796815. Published by ACORDO Sheet Music (A0.778007). Immer leiser wird mein Schlummer (Ever deeper down) is the second one in Fünf Lieder, Op.105. The melody is beautiful and melancholic.  The original key is E Major, however, B-flat major was selected for Viola performance in this music.  In the bars, No. 15, 17, 19, 21, 42, 44, 45, 48, and 49, piano part plays syncopated rhythm.  Not so skillful solo players might be difficult to  synchronize with piano in this region.  For such players, appropriate cue notes, which make clear the relationship between viola and piano, are added on the viola part note. However as a result, it is not so clear to read the viola part notes because of many cue notes.  To bypass the problem, we prepare two types of solo part notes, one is full of cue notes, the other is simplified.  Please use the former for studying.

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1032818 Composed by Daniell Mattern. Contemporary. Score and part. 58 pages. Daniell Mattern #5721229. Published by Daniell Mattern (A0.1032818). Sonata in a Simple Scale for Viola and PianoThe Simple Scale of the title is a series of alternating whole steps and half steps. There are three versions; any particular note will belong to two of the three. Thus, the two scales that include C go up either a whole step from C (C D Eb F F#…) or a half step (C C# D# E F#…); the third scale excludes C entirely (B C# D E F…). These scales allow for a variety of melodies, which often take on a modal character, and familiar chords, including major, minor, and diminished.Although the scale is simple, the Sonata is not for elementary players. The viola range goes to the C two octaves above middle C and there are occasional double and triple stops and stopped harmonics, and frequent meter changes. Also, the unusual scale does not fit the standard fingering patterns for either instrument. That said, the sonata is intended to be enjoyable for proficient, rather than virtuosic, players. In the introduction to the Sonata-Allegro movement, the viola explores motives and intervals, with subtle embellishment from the piano. These phrases build to a three-octave descending presentation of the simple scale; a trill then leads into the main theme. The piano sets up a jaunty accompaniment pattern, over which the viola plays the theme in measure-long segments. The second theme is a long, legato line in the viola that spans two octaves. The viola then sets up a two-measure ostinato, joined by a lumbering piano bass, before the piano treble floats on top with a melancholy closing theme. The development section plays mostly with the main theme, shifting meters as the two instruments engage in dialog. A bridging trill takes us into the recapitulation, but now the viola plays the jaunty accompaniment pattern, and the piano has the main theme. After the return of the second theme, varied in its accompaniment, the piano presents the ostinato of the closing theme, and the viola takes the melody, leading to a quiet and playful finish. In the second movement (Song), the piano begins a slow, rather dark theme, joined by the viola, and ending in a rising question that leads into the second section. Presented simply by the viola, this lilting 7/8 theme has a folk-song quality. It is repeated and embellished several times before the first theme returns, ending in a loud and angry exclamation. The Scherzo is a 6/8 whirlwind. The viola presents rapid repeated notes punctuated with three rising or falling notes; the piano enters gradually until both are giving a forceful statement. In the middle section, the viola sets up a whirling pattern with a drone, while the piano plays a dark version of the closing theme from the first movement. The first theme returns and the movement gallops to a rapid finish. The Rondo begins with an introduction that explores octaves and trills, leading into the main theme, with slightly dissonant 4/4 viola measures alternating with 7/8 answers in the piano. Bridging measures in 5/8 take us into a relaxed, waltz-like interlude of solo viola. A fast section with a touch of fugato follows, with the main theme presented in diminution by the viola at the end. This leads into a second interlude, this one exploring octaves, trills, and clusters in unmetered fragments that the instrumentalists play at their own tempos. The viola then emerges with a confident new theme, joined after a while by the piano. The main theme then returns in a rollicking 3/4 version that brings the piece to a close.

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1233582 Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. Easter,Holiday,Instructional,Wedding. Score and part. 5 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #829165. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1233582). Cloud Nine is a stand-alone reflective piece for viola and piano. It's written in D minor/F major which modulates to D major. The top note for the viola is the A above the staff (A5) but this occurs only once. The piece is for intermediate viola players who are comfortable in the upper range of the instrument. The treble clef is used for the middle section of the piece and the piano part is quite accessible. It's a slow, dreamy piece which is ideal for the intermediate viola player. It would make a good recital piece or could be effective as a relaxing encore.

Piano,Viola - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.522292 Composed by G F Handel. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Easter,Holiday,Wedding. Score and part. 6 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6637577. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522292). This piece is probably Handel’s best-known melody, although it began life as an operatic aria. The opera was called Xerxes, sometimes written Serses and pronounced something like “ZERT-seesâ€. It was commissioned by The King’s Theater in London and composed by Handel (who had become naturalized British and lived in London at the time) around 1737 and 1738. The opera is loosely based on the historical figure King Xerxes, who ruled from around 522-486 BC and was the fourth king of the Achaemenid Empire, a vast region that covered most of the present-day Middle East.   The melody is often known simply as Handel’s Largo (despite being marked “Larghetto†in the musical score) and is the opening aria in the opera. The aria, known by its opening line Ombra mai fu is sung by Xerxes to a plane tree: “Tender and beautiful fronds of my beloved plane tree, let fate smile upon you...†Although this lovely melody has survived over the years, the opera itself was a complete failure when it was first performed in London in 1738. This arrangement is in G major and the top note is the G above the alto clef (G5) and the piece generally requires the use of long and sustained bowing (indicted in the score), though the viola fingering has been omitted. The piano part has been kept as simple as possible. Being so well-known, this piece would make a popular encore number for a viola recital.

Piano,Viola - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1199017 By John Legend. By John Stephens, Lauren Frawley, Melanie Fontana, Michael Lindgren Schulze, Michel Lindgren Shulz, Michel Schulz, Mick Schultz, Stephen Franks, Stephen Mcgregor, and Steven Franks. Arranged by George B Chave. Chamber,Contemporary,Multicultural,Pop,Rock,World. Score and part. 7 pages. BrassMagicMusic.com #798088. Published by BrassMagicMusic.com (A0.1199017). This catchy Reggae-style piece, originally made famous by John Legend, features solo Viola with Piano Accompaniment geared toward the High School or advanced Middle School performer.  It is in concert G-major.  The viola range in this arrangement spans from written D4 to D5 [two ledger lines above the staff]. The diatonic nature of this arrangement (only 2 measures contain an accidental) and the range make this easily accessible to younger performers. There is, however, some syncopation in keeping with the original melody, but nothing out-of-reach for a competent performer.  The piano accompaniment is reasonably simple: a somewhat active L.H. part with chord comping in the R.H.
