Published by GuarrineMusic (A0.786003). I Dreamt That I Dwelt in Marble Halls   I found this in a songbook from the early 1900’s and adapted it viola solo and piano. It is an aria from the 1843 English Romantic opera The Bohemian Girl.  It is in 3/4 and in the key of Eb with a few melodic ornaments and the highest note is a G. It also contains very few dynamic markings. (express yourself!!) Very playable by players that know how to shift.  Grade 2+  Eb major

The 19th century was not only the era of great forms, monumental symphonies and melodious sonatas, no, the Romantic composers proved to be versatile and highly imaginative on the field of little music pieces as well. Robert Schumann was a master of the character piece for his instrument, the piano. From thirty of such poetic miniatures, he selected thirteen in 1838 for his Scenes of Childhood“, opus 15, the seventh, i.e. the one right in the middle, being Dreaming, the most famous among Schumann's compositions. It is a romantic gem the catchy melody of which will not get out of one's head. The beautiful setting contained in the present edition can be played even by non-pianists.

All three were composed between 1870 and 1877, then collected and published in 1878 under the title Trois Mélodies. Not originally conceived as a song cycle, these three songs acquired this opus number much later, in the 1890s. The poem for Après un rêve was loosely adapted from an anonymous Italian text by Romain Bussine. It describes, in the form of a dream, the imaginary flight of two lovers who are head over heels in love, although the last verse brings the dreamer inexorably back to harsh reality as dawn is breaking. In this version, the composition was arranged for Viola and Piano by Harry Walker.
