About the Composer

The 'Atalanta, HWV 35: Ouverture' was composed by the renowned Baroque composer, Georg Friedrich Händel. His imaginative works make him one of the most important figures of the Baroque period. Other well-known works of Handel's include 'The Messiah', 'Water Music', and 'Music for the Royal Fireworks'. He was a master at combining various instruments and emotional elements to create enthralling music.

The 'Atalanta, HWV 35: Ouverture' is based on the ancient Greek myth of Atalanta. In the myth, Atalanta is a swift and brave Princess who is challenged by a band of young suitors to a race. To the winners, she offers a prize of marriage. As we listen to Handel's composition, we can imagine the race beginning with the slow and steady 'Largo', as Atalanta calmly assesses the present, and takes her time to decide her path. As the 'Allegro' begins, we can feel her strength and power as she embarks on her journey, full of excitement and determination. As the piece builds, we can feel her courage and enthusiasm as she confronts the race ahead. Finally, we can picture Atalanta achieving success as the piece ends in jubilation.

An arrangement of one of Puccini’s greatest arias for Bb Trumpet & Piano. Great piece to improve trumpeter’s player’s bell canto style of playing. Take a listen to Conrad Gozzo’s playing on the Tutti Trumpet CD for a fine example! Quando me'n vo', also known as Musetta's Waltz, is a soprano aria, a waltz in act two of Puccini's 1896 opera La bohème. It is sung by Musetta, in the presence of her bohemian friends, hoping to reclaim the attention of her occasional boyfriend Marcello. This scene takes place at the Café Momus [fr]. Shortly after Mimì, Rodolfo, and their friends have taken seats for a drink, Marcello's former girlfriend, Musetta, shows up with her current patron, the elderly Alcindoro. They quarrel for a bit, then the episode begins as Musetta initiates her move on Marcello. She grabs the spotlight, musically speaking, for a short self-promoting aria (Quando me'n vo'). It is a song directed at the people in the café as much as at the audience in the theater.

Advanced to professional trumpeters will enjoy this effective, Baroque pastiche. The Andante is very lyrical and followed by a Lament for organ only, which whilst fully written out, in true Baroque style of a bridge passage, can be improvised around its basic theme. The Allegro is light and lively with a spirited ending. Andante and Allegro was premiered in 1995 in the Trumpet and Organ ‘Tubes and Pipes’ series of concerts in England and has become a concert favourite in trumpet recitals.

The accompaniment is written for either piano, or best with organ and has appropriate annotation for stops and the pedals. The trumpet part is provided for Trumpet in Bb as well as Eb. Bonus is that the combined pdf comes with a Baroque Analysis for teachers to assist explain stylistic, melodic and chordal aspects of the genre.
