Solace is dedicated to my first French horn teacher, Mr. Clarence Day. Mr. Day was an electrician who played
the horn professionally in local Pinellas County Florida symphony orchestras. He was an outstanding teacher
who motivated me, and I'm grateful to him for the positive impact he had in my life.
It is my hope that Solace will provide students with a song that they will enjoy learning to play and provide
other music educators with a teaching tool that can be used in helping to motivate and encourage their students.

The Serenade, Op. 37 by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile to perform.

Mr. Sauer's arrangement brings a beautiful feel to this 4-minute work, which is appropriate for advanced performers.

A piece for French horn and piano. n this work the platypus is tranquil in his den or in the water, then frolics in the river.

The Platypus is an Australian, semi-aquatic animal that spends its time in waterways, and its burrow next to the water’s edge. It is classified as a monotreme which means it has fur and lays eggs. When the British first took one home to England they thought they must have stuck together a couple of animals, because they look so unique. A furry animal with a duck like bill, how strange!

The male platypus have venomous spurs on their back legs, but people don’t get close enough to them to get hurt. They are known to be a very shy animal that can sometimes be spotted at sunset.

Charles Ives was one of the first American composers to gain international recognition, although most of his music was not performed during his lifetime. Ives wrote 114 songs in the early 1900's including these four:

1. Memories, 2. The Side Show, 3. Dreams and 4. War Song No. 2.

The songs include quotes of American folk songs, with whistling, singing and more making for a lively experience for performers and listeners.

Mr. Sauer once again has edited a brilliant new transcription, bringing Ives' music to life for the Horn world. Four Songs for Horn and Piano is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

The Intermezzo & Farandole by Georges Bizet are both from the 2nd L'Arlésienne Suite arranged by Guiraud in 1879, four years after Bizet's untimely death.

The Intermezzo is slow and powerful, whereas the Farandole, which incorporates the theme from the March of the Kings is fast and bouncy.

Mr. Sauer's excellent arrangement for horn and piano is a joy to perform. The 6-minute suite of two movements is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
