Grass Roots was composed during 2009-2010 for Steven Maxwell of Kansas State University. The inspiration for this composition was Ken Burn's series on America's National Parks. The composer was not only inspired by the beauty and grandeur of the parks, but also by the vision of a few people that turned into the reality, therefore the title of this composition. The first movement is called A Voice in the Wilderness and represents the voice of John Muir, who recognized the beauty of Yosemite and made an effort to preserve it for future generations. The lyrical sections reflect the beauty of the area and the chromaticism reflects the uncertainty of his efforts. Conflicts is the title of the second movement as it represents the opposing forces in the debate to create a national park system. Lively rhythm and counterpoint are used throughout the movement to express the opposing points of view and the heated arguments. The last movement, Manifestations is the realization of the dream of a national park system. The movement is lyrical and flowing and is designed to be both serene and awe-inspiring.

This work was composed for John Hardisky of Temple University. The work is in three movements that are linked together. The first movement is an Allegretto and is in sonata form. It is contrapuntal and syncopated. The second movement is song-like and is in 5/4 meter. A short cadenza links this movement with the third movement that is primarily in 6/8. It also contains syncopation and counterpoint. A cadenza occurs about two-thirds through this movement. After the cadenza, the work builds to an exciting climax. The work is very tonal and uses several modes for its melodic and harmonic material.

Three Animations for tuba and piano musically represents types of characters often used in animated movies. The movements are Ogre (moderate tempo with threatening sounds), Heroine (slow tempo and lyrical), and Hero (fast tempo and heroic). While the composition is not specifically programmatic, the last movement does transform part the Ogre and Heroine themes to suggest that the Hero is rescuing the Heroine from the clutches of the Ogre.
