Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed by E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone. Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family. Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Bass Trombone or Tuba and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.

Cherry Classics is proud to present a great new arrangement by Dr. Wade Goodwin. The Concerto for Bass Trombone with Piano accompaniment. Based on the original classic for Tenor Trombone, Dr. Goodwin has transposed the work down a fourth to make his arrangement work out perfectly for the range of the Bass Trombone. He has extended the cadenza in the final movement, adding some of his own ideas as an optional test for those who dare to go low. This work of about 10 minutes in length is appropriate for performers from advanced intermediate to advanced depending on the cadenza option chosen and would be perfect for recitals, juries, and competitions.

Entia Imaginaria, from the Latin imaginary beings is a subject that fascinates me, especially after reading Jorge Luis Borges's Book of Imaginary Beings.

This three movements composition include:

1. Phoenix - bird that dies by fire and then is reborn from its ashes;

2. Sirena (Mermaid) - Creature part woman, part fish, whose beauty and singing lured sailors against the rocks in the sea;

3. Hippogryphus (Hippogriff) - Winged creature with the head of griffin and horse body. It symbolizes an impossible union.

This work was requested by Nuno Henriques (Bass Trombone), who I dedicate and was composed between December 2011 and February 2012.

John Frith's new composition, Concertino is a major new work for Bass Trombone in three movements: Humoresque, Ballad and Scherzo. Mr. Frith lives in the UK has written this work for Bass Trombone virtuoso, Jonathan Warburton also from the UK.  The 13 minute work is for very advanced players and will challenge the technique and musicianship of the performer.  This work can be your major work on a recital or concert.  The version with Wind Ensemble and solo will be coming out soon.

Ralph Sauer has beautifully arranged four movements from Tchaikovsky's Four Pieces Opus. 40 for Tuba or Bass Trombone and Piano:

These four movements, totaling fourteen minutes offer the artist a great deal of musical contrasts, ranging from lyrical, dramatic, dance-like, etc.

Illusion, is a general commentary to the fact that life is mysterious and generally, uncertain, constantly shifting. We try to influence what happens but usually, outside forces determine the direction of our lives. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between illusion and reality, and, in fact, often people much prefer illusion to reality. 

Mv. 1 - Illusion starts out with an obscure time signature and is constantly shifting tonalities so for a while, you aren’t quite sure where you are. Life is full of such deceptions.

Mv. 2 - Fill the Wine Cup is a series of drinking songs with a lot of gayety and rollocking humour as the party gets more raucous, but eventually things get a little blurry and bombastic and the party winds down. The trombone, due to its ability to imitate drunken reeling with glissandos, is often cast in this role. 

M. 3 - Destiny seems to march on and on, with mankind hoping to control their future, but the implication is that fate is more powerful than one can control.

M. 4 - The ultimate illusion: a Political Debate. The trombone starts out as the first candidate, and the saxophone is the other. The music is circus-like as befits many heated debates.

Illusion was commissioned by Lucas Kaspar and JD Little. The original version was written for Alto Sax and Bass Trombone
