Composed by Edvard Grieg. Arranged by James Guthrie, ASCAP. Halloween,Instructional,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 61 pages. Jmsgu3 #5306349. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.551509).

1. Morning Mood, 2. Ase's Death, 3. Anitra's Dance, 4. In the Hall of the Mountain King

Grieg Background

In the first place, Edvard Grieg (1843 –1907) was a Norwegian composer as well as a concert pianist. As a matter of fact, most music historians consider him one of the foremost Romantic era composers. Consequently, his music is part of the international standard classical repertoire. Grieg moreover used Norwegian folk music in his own compositions.  Consequently, he ushered Norwegian music to transnational consciousness. Furthermore, he forged a national musical identity for Norway. It is important to realize that he did this in a manner similar to Jean Sibelius in Finland, and Bedřich Smetana in Bohemia.

Legacy

Grieg is celebrated in the city of Bergen. For example, the city has erected numerous statues depicting Grieg. Specifically, the city has named a concert hall (Grieg Hall), a music school (Grieg Academy) and a professional choir (Edvard Grieg Kor) after him. As a matter of fact, there is also a museum located at his former home in Troldhaugen.

Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Op. 46)

Grieg wrote incidental music for the purpose of illustrating a play by Ibsen known as Peer Gynt. The play includes, in particular, the famous selection entitled, In the Hall of the Mountain King. In this composition, Grieg indeed depicts the exploits of the scoundrel, Peer Gynt. In one famous episode, for example, Peer steals a bride at her wedding. For this reason, the people chase him, but soon Peer falls, thereupon striking his skull on a boulder. He wakens forthwith in a highland bounded by angry gnomes. Consequently, the music of In the Hall of the Mountain King represents the mad gnomes taunting Peer. Therefore, each time the theme repeats it gets louder and faster. In the end, Peer surprisingly escapes from the mountain.

Holberg Suite and Misc. Summary

It must be remembered that Grieg originally wrote his Holberg Suite for the piano. In other words, he only later arranged it for strings. Further, Grieg composed by and large many songs with lyrics by famous writers such as Heine, Goethe, Ibsen, Hans Christian Andersen, Rudyard Kipling, and others. On balance, Norwegian pianist Eva Knardahl recorded altogether Grieg’s whole piano catalog on LP in 1980. These recordings were released again on CD in 2006. In any event, Grieg himself performed and recorded the bulk of these pieces toward the end of his life.

Composed by Ernst Sachse. Arranged by Charles Vernon. Classical,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 25 pages. Gordon Cherry #6519139. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792795).

Not much is known about the origins of the Concertino, except that the three-movement work was most likely first written and performed on the E-flat Cornet in the mid-19th Century by Sachse himself. Since that time, the work has been edited for Trombone and Bass Trombone.

Along with the David Concertino, the two works are great examples of German Romantic solo writing for the brass family.

Charles Vernon has arranged an excellent sounding edition for Contrabass Trombone and Piano of about 12 minutes in length for advanced performers.

Composed by Reynaldo Hahn. Arranged by Graham Boag. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Latin. Score and part. 22 pages. Graham Boag #731734. Published by Graham Boag (A0.1131518).

Reynaldo Hahn (1874 – 1947) was a Venezuelan-born French composer, conductor, music critic, and singer. He is best known for his songs – mélodies – of which he wrote more than 100, mostly composed in a thirty-year period from 1888 to the end of the First World War. Following the War demand for songs with piano accompaniment diminished and he turned to other forms, composing five operas with another unfinished.        We have three examples of Hahn’s melodies spanning his career, ‘Si me vers avaient des alles’ composed in 1888 aged just14. ‘A Chloris’ (1913) and ‘Je me souviens’ (1947) which was part of his final set of ‘9 Mélodies retrouvées’. These are all lyrical and highlight Hahn' musical voice. He had great respect for both Massenet and Faure whom he considered as the master of the mélodie and both are reflected in his writing especially his earlier songs.      In this YouTube link Michael Massong plays 'A Chloris'.

Composed by Marcello, Benedetto. Arranged by Hall, Mike. Baroque,Classical. Score and parts. 62 pages. Gordon Cherry #4729063. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811036).

Marcello's Six Sonatas have become a mainstay of the Trombone literature. This masterful critical edition of Sonatas 4, 5 & 6 by Professor Mike Hall of Old Dominion University, includes a descriptive booklet of his own suggestions for Baroque ornamenation based on his studies of the period.  This usually dry area is brought alive by Professor Hall, with easy to use written out examples of trills, embellishments, etc.  The actual Trombone part includes an extra blank staff for the soloist's own ornamentation markings based on Professor Hall's instructions. This edition is a must for the serious performer.

Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by Diego Marani. Classical,Film/TV,Instructional,Romantic Period,Wedding. Score and part. 12 pages. Diego Marani #1040691. Published by Diego Marani (A0.1461942).

The Impromptus, Op. 90, D. 899, are a set of four impromptus for solo piano composed by Franz Schubert in 1827. They were written in the same year as the Impromptus, Op. 142, though only the first two pieces were published during Schubert's lifetime. Together with the latter set, they have become a cornerstone of the piano repertoire. The third Impromptu (Andante) is an wonderful epitome of slow-moving Schubert melody over a flowing arpeggiated accompaniment. This lyrical and meditative work remains unified in mood and texture throughout. The piece is a classic example of Schubert's penchant for long melodic lines.

This easy arrangement for trombone with piano accompaniment is suitable for classroom, repertoire, recital, wedding or for an emotional encore.

Composed by Frank Bridge. Arranged by Ralph Sauer. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Score and part. 20 pages. Gordon Cherry #6447395. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792788).

Frank Bridge's Pensiero and Allegro Appassionato was first published in 1908 for Viola and Piano. The two movements are a perfectly balanced pair of pieces, the first being elegiac in mood and the second more outgoing and dramatic. They both show Bridge's mastery of technique for piano and instrumental writing as well as chromatic harmony.

This work is another example of Ralph Sauer's vision of creating arrangements of great music previously unavailable to Trombonists by magically editing the scores so they transform from unaccompanied Piano solos to chamber music for Trombone and Piano.

This work of about 8-minutes in length is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

SKU: A0.1204336

Composed by American folk hymn tune. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Easter,Folk,Lent,Traditional. Score and part. 8 pages. Con Spirito Music #802815. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1204336).

Here's a lovely, lyrical tune that's ideal for use during Holy Week or as a meditative prelude, offertory, or communion selection for trombone (or euphonium, cello) and piano.

Saw Ye My Savior? is an early 19th-century American folk hymn with a tune that predates it by perhaps 100 years or more.

Both the text and the tune seem to have been freely adapted to the subject of the song (whether secular or sacred) and the singer, which is typical of folk songs and folk hymns handed down from one generation to the next. For example, the text of the hymn, which begins Saw ye my Savior, saw ye my Savior, saw ye my savior and my God? is similar to that of an English folk song, Saw you my father, saw you my mother, saw you my true love John?

In the 1858 edition of William Walker's shape-note hymnal, The Southern Harmony, and Musical Companion, the source cited for the text and tune is Baptist Harmony (1834), p. 477. However, William Hauser and Benjamin Turner's collection, The Olive Leaf (1878), refers to the tune as a Scotch air; and certainly, the Scotch snap rhythm in measures 3 and 4 of the tune lend credence to that.

The website, hymnary.org, cites Saw Ye My Savior? as having been published in 167 hymnals (all prior to 1979 but one). Two similar tunes, CRUCIFIXION (Southern Harmony) and ATONEMENT are associated with the text.

Because the subject of the text is Christ's crucifixion (
see representative text here), Saw Ye My Savior? has often been used as a choral anthem in Palm Sunday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday worship services. This arrangement of the lovely, flowing tune for trombone (or euphonium, cello) and piano is ideal at any time as a meditative prelude to worship, or as an offertory or communion selection.

Composed by Krejci, Miroslav. 20th Century,Contemporary,Romantic Period. Score and part. 21 pages. Gordon Cherry #4728857. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792223).

The Sonatina for Trombone & Piano was originally published after its composition, but soon became lost. It has recently been brought back into the repertoire.  Cherry Classics Music is proud to be bringing this very fine work back to life.

The style of this 3 movement work is similar to the well known Sonatina for Trombone and Piano by Serocki.

Miroslav Krejci was born on the 4th of November, 1891 in Rychnov nad Kn??nou (a small town situated in the eastern part of Bohemia of the Czech Republic).  There, he also attended high school. After graduation he travelled to Prague, studying natural science, geography and musicology at Charles University. At the Conservatory he studied composition under Vitezslav Novak. Krejci also became a teacher at a few grammar schools in the Czech republic. He died on the 29th of December 1964 in Prague.

Miroslav Krejci created music for many various ensembles and his compositions are among the most prolific of Czech composers. For example, he composed the following:  two Operas: The Summer and The Last Hetman, two Symphonies, string quartets, sonatas for violins, trios for wind instruments, sonatinas for brasswind instruments and piano and five piano cycles. He wrote many vocal compositions, especially for chorus. Krejci also created many arrangements of folk songs for chorus and for solo voice with piano accompaniment.

The Sonatina for Trombone and Piano was composed in 1948.  It was first performed on the occasion of the composer's birthday.
