Five Pieces, Op. 3 by Carl Nielsen is the composer's first collection of piano music. It was published during the 1890-91 period while he was traveling through Europe to study. The movements are:

1 Folktune, 2. Humoresque, 3. Arabesque, 4. Mignon and 5. Elf's Dance

The five movements beautifully arranged by Ralph Sauer contain lots of character and even at this early stage show the composer's immense talent. This work of about 7 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Ravel's Mother Goose was composed in 1908 as a suite of five piano duets for the children of his friends, the Godebski's. They are based on the well-known story first published in 1697. In 1911 Ravel arranged them in a longer format for a ballet orchestra. The music has a magical childlike quality to it of innocence and simplicity.

The group of five pieces are entitled:

This set of short pieces was composed as a sequel of sorts to Slidin', my earlier collection of ten solo brass works. There are technical similarities between the two sets, in that both pieces incorporate techniques such as legato and staccato playing, slurs and glissandi. However, in Five-Spot I have employed a slightly larger range, somewhat more challenging rhythms and have used all 7 positions. Therefore, I classed the pieces as being of advanced beginner or intermediate difficulty. I have also included intermediate-level piano accompaniment.

 These pieces may be played separately or as a set. The tempi are meant as guides to indicate proper performance speed, but are certainly subject to modification as needed. They are also meant to be fun!

The Five Pieces in Folk Style by Schumann were originally written for Cello and Piano. They have been expertly transcribed for Tenor Trombone by Ralph Sauer, retired Principal Trombonist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.  The 5 movements are in contrasting styles and work very well for Trombone.  Schumann was considered the Poet of the Romantics.  This music is expressive and full of robust and elegant phrases.  For moderately advanced performers.  The complete work is almost 17 minutes in length and can be a major work on your concert.

Scott Joplin is celebrated as the United States’ first well-known black composer, making his name as a writer of piano rags. His life was a constant struggle with adversity, and Joplin died relatively young in 1917, at the dawn of the recording age. Few remembered Joplin’s music until a revival in the 1970s brought The Entertainer and others to the world’s attention. Nowadays Scott Joplin has taken his rightful place in the gallery of great American composers.

Education

First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five.

The Five

The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials.

Western Techniques

More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature.

Influences

Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique.

Swan Lake Op. 20

Tchaikovsky composed Swan Lake in 1875-76. To begin with, most noteworthy the ballet failed to attract a positive reception. Over time, however, the ballet became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. The ballet was certainly first performed by the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow.
