Miss Trombonism by African American composer, trombonist, bandleader and publisher Nathaniel Cleophas Shorty Davis was written in 1918 as a Trombone solo in the American genre of Ragtime featuring the trombone's patented glissando as the hook. These solos were also called smears or jazzes. Miss Trombonism is one of five entertaining works of Davis' Trombone Family written between 1915 and 1921 with the subtitle - A Slippery Tune. The granddaughter of Oh Slip It Man and daughter of Mr. Trombonology.  This arrangement has been wonderfully arranged by Aaron Hettinga for Trombone and Piano and is playable by moderately advanced performers. Cherry Classics Music will be publishing the complete series of these works by Davis. Thanks to Douglas Yeo for his research and advice.

The work's premier was performed in 2015 by retired Principal Trombonist of the Boston Symphony, Ronald Barron and accompanied at the Piano by composer Eric Ewazen. Here is what Mr. Ewazen has said about Situation Update: I had the pleasure of hearing Ron Barron play David Fetter's exciting and virtuosic new work for Trombone and Piano, Situation Update. David's music allows the Trombonist to sing and soar in 3 contrasting movements filled with vivid colors, beautiful and expressive harmonies, and a wonderful flowing rhythmic energy. They were written in the same year as the Impromptus, Op. 142, though only the first two pieces were published during Schubert's lifetime. Together with the latter set, they have become a cornerstone of the piano repertoire. The third Impromptu (Andante) is an wonderful epitome of slow-moving Schubert melody over a flowing arpeggiated accompaniment. This lyrical and meditative work remains unified in mood and texture throughout. The piece is a classic example of Schubert's penchant for long melodic lines.This easy arrangement for trombone with piano accompaniment is suitable for classroom, repertoire, recital, wedding or for an emotional encore.

Country Dance Mr. Sauer has done a beautiful job scoring these works for Trombone.  There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the Great War, WW I.  Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810899). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire.The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Trombone and Piano.

The F-major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly. It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that was never completed. This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Trombone repertoire.Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

The Serenade, Op. 37 was conceived for Cello with Piano accompaniment, but later in life the composer scored the work for the solo instrument with orchestra. The Trombone world knows Rimsky-Korsakov for his Concerto with Band.  The Serenade has a very similar mood to the slow movement of the Concerto.  It's beautiful lilting rhythm combined with a wonderful melody makes this work very worthwhile.  Mr. Sauer brings a true Trombone feel to the 4 1/2 minute work for advanced performers.
