Gordon Cherry #4821591. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792415). Lalo was born in Lille (Nord), in northernmost France. He attended that city's music conservatory in his youth. Then, beginning at age 16, Lalo studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Berlioz's old enemy François Antoine Habeneck. For several years, he worked as a string player and teacher in Paris. In 1848, he joined with friends to found the Armingaud Quartet, playing viola and second violin. Lalo's earliest surviving compositions are songs and chamber works. He dedicated most of his career to the composition of chamber music, which was in vogue, and to writing works for orchestra. These two works beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauder show the core of Lalo's chamber music; personal, subtle at times and filled with a French lyricism. For advanced performers.

Barto�k's Allegro Barbaro, composed in 1911 is one of his most famous solo piano works, written in his typical style using folk elements based on Hungarian Pentatonic and Romanian chromatic scales. The music has even been used on a composition by the Progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer from their 1970 debut album. Ralph Sauer's brilliant arrangement for Trombone and Piano is reminiscent of the famous Trombone passage from the Miraculous Mandarin ballet suite. The Petite Suite, published in 1885, is Borodin's major work for the Piano and originally comprised of seven movements.  Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Rêverie and Sérénade.  The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music.  After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite. The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle.  Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

The Sérénade, Opus 98 was originally written for the great 20th century Cellist, Pablo Casals. Mr. Ralph Sauer has kept the arrangement in the same key as the Cello. The work is playable by advanced performers and is in tenor clef most of the way through. This arrangement is another example of Mr. Sauer’s excellent feel for the subtleties of the composer’s style.

The songs of Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth's Magic Horn) by Gustav Mahler are set for voice and piano and voice and orchestra taken from German folk poems assembled and published by editors Arnim and Brentano around 1805-08. The Vier Lieder beautifully edited for Trombone (Tenor or Bass) by Ralph Sauer are taken from Mahler's fourth set of these poems published in 1899. The four songs are: I. Wer hat dies Liedlein erdacht? (Who has created this song?) II. Lob des hohen Verstandes (In praise of lofty intellect) III. Verlor’ne Müh’ (Labor lost) IV. Lied des Verfolgten im Turm (Song of the persecuted in the tower) Mr. Sauer also includes the German lyrics with English translations. Altogether the songs are about 12 minutes in length. The range is suitable for moderately advanced performers.

The Concerto was probably written between 1717 and 1723 while he was the Kapellmeister at Anhalt-Köthen. The two solo parts are musically intertwined in an almost hypnotic blend of scales and arpeggios and are a joy to perform. The Largo beautifully transcribed by Ralph Sauer is about 7 1/2 minutes in length and is appropriate for advanced performers.

Country Dance Mr. Sauer has done a beautiful job scoring these works for Trombone.  There is a wonderful simplicity to Bridge's music, a simplicity that was lost forever just two years later at the beginning of the Great War, WW I.  Bridge's most famous composition student was Benjamin Britten, who wrote one of his greatest works as an homage to Bridge.

This wonderful arrangement by Ralph Sauer is appropriate for advanced performers and is about 4 minutes in length.
