Alexander Scriabin’s music has been described as mystical, lyrical, and idiosyncratic. He was known as the most innovative and controversial early modern Russian composer. His works were ignored for many years until recently and are now seen as “sincere expression(s) of genius�. The Two Etudes for Trombone and Piano are early works of Scriabin, originally written for Solo Piano taken from Op 8. They show lyricism, passion, moodiness, chromatic harmonies, and great expression. Mr. Sauer arranged two wonderful new works for advanced performers who wish to explore this area, largely unknown to the Trombone world.

Alexander Borodin was actually trained as a chemist and physician and spent a good deal of his time promoting womens’ issues, much to the consternation of his fellow composers who wound up finishing up much of his work after his sudden death at the age of 53. The opera Prince Igor is possibly his greatest and boldest work with many beautiful melodies coming forth, especially the Chorus and Dance of the Polovetsain Maidens. The music has an mysterious Eastern sound which is very captivating. There is nothing like this written for the Trombone and Mr. Sauer’s arrangement is wonderful.This work is about 7 minutes in length for advanced performers.

The Petite Suite, published in 1885, is Borodin's major work for the Piano and originally comprised of seven movements.  Mr. Sauer's arrangement incorporates three of them: Intermezzo, Rêverie and Sérénade.  The Petite Suite was dedicated to the Belgian Countess Louise de Mercy-Argenteau, who was a supporter of Borodin and his music.  After Borodin's death in 1887, Glazunov orchestrated the Suite.

The music has that Eastern flavor so indicative of Borodin's melodies, mysterious, lyrical and subtle.  Advanced performers will enjoy this work which has been so beautifully arranged by Mr. Sauer.

Élégie, Op. 44 was composed in 1893 originally for Viola and Piano. It is thought to be a memorial for either Anton Rubinstein and/or Tchaikovsky, both of whom died the year before.

The 6-minute work very nicely arranged by Dr. Cory Mixdorf is an Allegretto in 9/8 meter, poignantly lyrical, of somber mood and appropriate for advanced performers.

In 1891 Scriabin hurt his right hand from over-practicing. He practiced only using his left hand and composed the Prélude et Nocturne opus 9 in 1894. It became a big hit and sold thousands of copies.

Young Glazunov had the special opportunity to meet Franz Liszt in 1884 while on a tour of Europe arranged by his publisher. Liszt was very impressed with the young Glazunov and arranged to have his 1st Symphony performed in Weimar. Upon hearing of Liszt’s death in 1886, Glazunov wrote this Élégie in his memory with the subtitile Une Pensée à François Liszt.

The music embodies emotions of nostalgia, sweet remembrance and grief. This 8-minute jewel, originally for Cello and Piano has been beautifully arranged for Trombone by Ralph Sauer. For advanced performers.
