This Trio Sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1712 for pairs of ‘fluÌ‚tes traversieres, fluÌ‚tes a bec, violons, hautbois, &c.’ with continuo by Mr. Hotteterre, FluÌ‚te de la Chambre du Roy. They were dedicated to the Duke of Orleans and published ‘avec privilege du Roy.’ The first Sonata has been edited and arranged for flute, oboe & clarinet in Bb. The four movements, Prelude, Fugue, Grave and Gigue, are in the Baroque style with the interest equally shared between the three parts. Dynamics in the 1712 edition are French - doux and fort. These have been standardised as p & f. The top parts were printed in the soprano clef - with g on the bottom line as was common in France at the time. Amusingly this led to some modern ill informed speculation about flutes of the period being expected to play low bs! In this edition all edits are shown using parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. The Trio is suitable for players of intermediate standard and above and provides repertoire in the French Baroque style for  an ensemble of players just a few years beyond the reach of Hotteterre.

This is the third of a set of three Pièces en trio published in Paris in 1692 which have previously been attributed to Jean Baptiste Lully.  The scoring indicated was ‘ Pour les Flutes, violin, & Dessus ve Viole Composées par M. Marais, Ordinaire, de la Musique de la Chambre du Roy.’ The dedication was to Mademoiselle Roland.The Suite has thirteen separate movements though the Double is a variation of the preceding Gavotte and the four Menuets would have been played without a break. In editing the Suite I have modernised the musical notation e.g. notes tied over bar/measure lines indicated by a dot are shown as tied notes of the correct value. All editings are shown in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. No dynamic markings are indicated in the original edition and, as these are very much a matter of individual taste, I have left them to your discretion.The suite is for three equal players of intermediate standard and above. The movements are, Prelude, Sarabande, Fantaisie champetre, Gavotte en rondeau, Double, Gigue, Bransle Village, Rigaudon, 4 Menuets & Symphonie.The arrangement includes a clarinet, an instrument which was being developed from the chalumeau in the late seventeenth century by Johan Denner and his son in Nuremburg.

The sonata is the first of a set of six published in Paris in 1725 by L’Auteur & Boivin ‘Avec Privilege du Roy.1725.’ The title page described them as ‘SONATES EN TRIO pour Trois Flûtes Transversieres sans Basse Par MR BOISMORTIER. OEVRE SEPTIÈME.’ The publication consisted of a set of parts each with the title page followed by a copy of the  Privilége granted by King Louis to Boismortier to print and sell his music. There are 5 movements, Gravement, Allemande Gayment, lentement, Gavotte en rondeau & Gayment. Players of Intermediate standard will enjoy playing this music. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. No dynamics were included in the original and none have been added.  Players should feel free to add their own.  For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments. The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

Published by Keith Moss (A0.977003). The trio was written in 2012 for the first Stefans Grové Composition Competition.  The brief was to write for any trio combination. Based on the poem by Gerard Manley Hopkings, As Kingfishers catch fire, Dragonflies draw flame, the imagery derived from the poem was the driving force behind the piece. Set in three movements I shifted the slow movement to the end. This was the first piece that explored the possibilities I set out to find regarding augmented triads and their resolutions.The first movement explores these possibilities but the difficulty lay in producing all three triadic resolutions with only three instruments simultaneously.  The piece became an exercise in restraint.  The second movement followed as a scherzo where arpegiated figures helped to flesh out the harmonic structures I was seeking.  The final movement is a free-form canon of sorts putting the active preceding movements to rest. The piece subsequently won the First Prize in the competition and was awarded in early 2013.

Mozart wrote the 5 Divertimenti in 1783 probably for his friend Anton Paul Stadler, the leading performer on the clarinet and basset horn of the day, for whom he also wrote his clarinet concerto. The 5 Divertimenti are all in the key of Bb and all have 5 movements and were intended for three basset horns or two clarinets and bassoon. This arrangement for flute, oboe & clarinet keeps as close to Mozart’s original as possible, the main changes are changes of register to suit the ranges of the new scoring. The inconsistencies in the flagging (or not) of the grace notes have been resolved in accordance with performance practice at the time. Edited dynamics have been placed in parentheses and slurs in broken lines. There are 5 movements, Allegro, menuet & Trio, Adagio, Menuet & Trio & Rondo: Allegro assai. The piece is suitable for all players of about grade 6 A.B.R.S.M. and above and makes an excellent concert item for both formal and informal ocasions.

Sections of all parts have beentransposed up an octave to accommodate the ranges of the wind instruments. Players would have added ornaments e.g. mordants and trills especially during the repeats. Some of the more obvious have been indicated in parentheses. The only dynamic indications are in the Gigue for the final 2 bars/measures of each section. The convention of playing the repeated sections in a contrasting dynamic (loud - soft or soft - loud) would have sufficed for the other movements. The clarinet part is in A. The three movements, Largo - Andante and Allegros in, respectively common and triple time provide equal independent parts for players of intermediate standard and above. This easy arrangement for woodwind trio has been adapted to be simple to perform and understand the period minuet form of the original work for various levels of musical knowledge. It can be freely played by beginning students due to the ease built into the piece in relation to the author's suggested interpretation. Recommended for performance in academic recitals, and public festivals, it also serves as a study of Baroque repertoire. This famous piece has traditionally been attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach, as it appears in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena , a notebook that Bach gave to his wife Anna Magdalena in 1725 and which was to be filled with the favorite selections of Bach family members. However, recent research has concluded that this minuet, sometimes referred to as BWV Anhang 114. was probably composed by Christian Petzold, a German composer and organist contemporary with Bach.
