Joseph Haydn wrote 126 trios for baryton, viola and violoncello. At that time the baryton was the favorite instrument of Prince Esterházy, in whose service Haydn was. The prince wanted to build up a repertoire and commissioned these trios from Haydn.

This is the first of a set of four Divertimenti which Haydn composed for his first visit to London in 1794. They were originally written for two flutes and cello and here the arrangement is for flute, oboe and clarinet. There are three movements, Allegro moderato, Andante and Vivace. They are suitable for an ensemble of players of intermediate standard.
