A delightful collection of 14 pieces for grades 2-6 Bb clarinet & piano
Depicts the goings on outside and around a Parisian cafe. Several pieces in the collection currently feature on the Trinity College London Bb clarinet syllabus (November 2022 - ongoing).
 
Written in 2013, Scenes from a Parisian Cafe is a beautiful collection of 14 concert and educational pieces for beginner to intermediate (roughly grades 2 - 6) by UK composer Chris Lawry.

The pieces cover the events of a day from the viewpoint of the cafe, from morning to night, and covers a range of tempos and styles with something to suit any occasion and mood. Witness a couple dancing in the rain, a bandoneon player busking, a marching band passing by, and the stars emerging as the evening comes to a close (and much more). With a total length of 27 mins, this is a very good value for money and exciting addition to any concert, educational, or general repertoire. 

The 38 page score (with 18 page part booklet) comes with an accompanying full demonstration tracks (Sax with piano) and a piano-only backing tracks for each piece. These are accessed via the printed download code printed in the publication.

Performance practice suggestions.
- For the semiquavers make sure to have a slower metronomic beat on and make sure you get the semiquaver runs very clear and precise and only start increasing the bpm once you feel comfortable.
- For the altissimo G - long notes on the top notes to make sure you have plenty of diaphragm support.

Historical Context
- Riotte was the contemporary of Beethoven, although his work nowadays isn't very 'popular' he was a fantastic composer!

Lady Gaga - for Brass?!! Really??

This is a great song and works really well as an instrumental solo for brass instruments. It comes from the 2018 remake of the film 'A Star is Born' and is sung originally by Lady Gaga.

I was asked to do an arrangement of the song for a young lady to sing with Boobs & Brass. I was struck by the quality of the words and the music and immediately thought of it as a great addition to the solo repertoire.

In terms of standard, I would judge this to be around Grades 5 to 6 ABRSM/Trinity and makes for an interesting challenge away from the grading syllabus.

This is an arrangement for solo instrument and piano pitched at around the level of ABRSM Grade 4/5 for most instruments. The range of notes is very compact with the difficulty steming from the often complicated rhythms and also the opening statement of the main theme is unaccompanied requiring the soloist to play with confidence and accuracy. The use of syncopated rhythms makes this an excellent repertoire piece.

Heaven Is a Place on Earth is a single by American singer Belinda Carlisle from her second studio album, Heaven on Earth (1987). Written by Rick Nowels and Ellen Shipley, the song was released as the lead single from the Heaven on Earth album on September 14, 1987, and it reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 on December 5, 1987, becoming Carlisle's only US chart-topper to date. 

A month later it peaked at number one in the United Kingdom, where it held the top spot of the UK Singles Chart for two weeks. In Australia it peaked at number 2. It is considered to be Carlisle's signature song.

The song was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1988, but lost out to Whitney Houston's I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me).

The work was written for the famous Dutch bass clarinettist Henri Bok. A three movement suite which highlights the versatility of the clarinet. 

In the Tradition – An enjoyable piece written in the “textbook†Sonata form. One will be able to find an Introduction, Primary Theme, Transition, Secondary theme, Closing Theme, Development, and the Recapitulation. The classical styling showcases the clarinet’s versatility, range, and colors. 

In the Tinnabular – This melancholy piece explores the minimalist style of composition invented by Arvo Pärt called tintinnabuli. The two voice types characterized in this method (‘tintinnabular’ arpeggiating voice/the stepwise diatonic voice) are found in the piano while the clarinet adds a melody. Both of these voices expand, note by note, over time. 

In the Time of Rag – A lively and entertaining piece in the ‘ragtime’ style. Performers are encouraged to improvise, as was customary for these pieces. The drum set is not necessary but does add a great dimension to the music. From my research, I believe the style of drumming needed is “2nd line drummingâ€. The high hat and snare notation is meant to simulate the beats using brushes, rather than sticks, on the snare while maintaining the march rhythms. Washboards, tambourines, and the like could be incorporated at the discretion of the percussionist. Dynamic levels of the drums should not overtake the clarinet and piano but enhance the overall performance.
