Composed by Edward MacDowell (1860-1908). Arranged by BRIAN W. COPPING. Contest,Festival,Romantic Period. Score and part. 5 pages. EMK Music #595838. Published by EMK Music (A0.990201).

‘To a Wild Rose’ is one of the most popular pieces from Edward MacDowell’s ‘Woodland Sketches’ (Op.51) written in 1896. While the melody of ‘To a Wild Rose’ has a poignant and retrospective romantic simplicity, more contemporary textures are achieved through the use of more progressive chords with altered, fifths, sevenths and ninths. The overall effect is an endearing charm that has contributed to its longevity.

From Woodland Sketches. Composed by Edward MacDowell. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Op. 51/1. Schott Music - Digital #Q11837. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11837).

The American composer and pianist Edward MacDowell (1860–1908) is rather unknown around here, even though he had his artistic roots in here: For he was trained as a pianist in Paris, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden, and Frankfurt. After his return to his home country, he worked as a teacher but was also director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra for eight years. During that time (1896) he composed 'Woodland Sketches' Op. 51 which is among the best-known of his piano compositions, especially the opening piece of his musical landscape paintings: 'To a wild rose' which is a simple, yet harmonically spiced melody full of peace and ease, without any technical tricks.
