Composed by James Pierpont. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christmas. Score and part. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3408937. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548663).

Jingle Bells arranged for Bb clarinet & piano. Jingle Bells is perhaps the most famous songs in American music history. James L. Pierpont published the song as One Horse Open Sleigh in the late 1850’s. Since its introduction, people began to insist that Pierpont wrote it for a Sunday school choir. However, it seems unlikely that such a secular song would be considered appropriate during that historical period for Sunday school.

Christmas Repertoire

Pierpont wrote the song for the Thanksgiving holidays, but over time people began to think of it more as a Christmas song. Some choirs adopted it as part of their Christmas repertoire in the 1860s and 1870s. Jingle Bells was first recorded in 1889 on a wax cylinder.

Origins

No one knows where Pierpont composed the song. One theory suggests he wrote it in Medford Massachusetts in 1850. Sleigh races were certainly popular in 19th Century Massachusetts. To this day, a commemorative placard appears in Medford square claiming that it is the birthplace of Jingle Bells. Others suggest that he wrote it in Savannah, Georgia where he was an organist and music director at the Unitarian Church. This theory gains support from the copyright date of 1857. We know he was living in Savannah by then.

Traffic Signals

Horse-drawn sleighs are relatively quiet in the snow. Consequently, horses were usually equipped with bell-laden straps so as to avoid accidents at blind intersections. Sleigh drivers in 19th Century New England were constantly vigilant, listening for the sounds of approaching horse-drawn sleighs. The tune imitates the rhythm that the trotting horse bells produce.

Social Context

Jingle Bells was sung as a drinking song at local revelries: during the song folks would rhythmically jangle the ice in their glasses. A sleigh ride gave couples an opportunity to be alone together. The term Jingle bells is a poetic descriptive adjective referring specifically to the more accurate term sleigh bells. In many arrangements, sleigh bells are used to accentuate the rhythm during the song chorus.

Composed by James Pickering. Sonata for Clarinet and Piano. Score and parts. 34 pages. Forton Music - Digital #FM633. Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM633).

ISBN 9790570485321.

The Sonata for Clarinet in B flat and Piano comes from a relatively unsettled period. Much of the music is a reflection on the cyclic nature of negative thought, the recurring arpeggios at the opening give some indication of this. Breaking out of these patterns only seems to lead to further dissonance and uncertainty. It also explores the effect of lowering notes by a single semitone and how the smallest of intervals can have a significant impact on the harmony at any given moment. The work is in four movements: 1. Andante moderato. This movement features two main musical statements pivoting around a central dance like idea. 2. Largo. A movement exploring a sense of isolation and disconnect between the Clarinet and Piano. 3. Largo con moto. A moment of calm, featuring some of the melodic contours from the previous movement but treated as if heard with a different frame of mind. 4. Allegro con moto. A slightly mischievous finale, featuring moments where the instruments imitate each other in an almost mocking fashion.

Composed by Antonin Dvorak. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Instructional,Romantic Period,Sacred,Standards. Score and part. 12 pages. Jmsgu3 #3493999. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549420).

Score: 7 pages, solo part: 2 pages, piano part: 3 pages. Duration: 4:25 Not difficult, but requires sensitivity & dynamic control. Suitable for recitals, church meditations, or school programs.

Dvořák Background

Antonín Dvořák (1841 –1904) was, of course, a composer from Czechoslovakia. As a matter of fact, he was among the first Bohemian composers to attain universal recognition. It is important to realize that the late Romantic Nationalist period featured composers who used traditional and folk elements to portray the character of their nation. In particular, we see this in the music of Grieg (Norway), Finland (Sibelius), and Smetana (Bohemia).  Dvořák relied markedly on rhythms and other characteristics of Moravian and Bohemian folk music.

Ascent to Fame

Dvořák was truly a child musical prodigy on the violin. The premiere performances of his compositions notably occurred in 1872 and 1873. He submitted his First Symphony in particular to a German competition, but it failed to win. Consequently, in 1874 he presented two more symphonies to the Austrian State Prize for Composition. Johannes Brahms was the principal of the jury and was accordingly very impressed. They forthwith awarded the prize to Dvořák in 1874, 1876, and 1877. At this point, Brahms thereupon endorsed Dvořák to the publisher Simrock. Later, the publisher commissioned Dvořák to compose the Slavonic Dances, Op. 46. These became popular overnight and, as a result, Dvořák's worldwide status was launched.

International Status

Dvořák visited England upon invitation nine times. On each visit, he frequently conducted performances of his own compositions. He conducted concerts of his music, especially in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Eventually, the Prague Conservatory in fact appointed Dvořák as a professor. There, to be sure, he wrote his famous Dumky Trio.

United States

Consequently, the National Conservatory of Music of America appointed him as director in 1892. As a result, Dvořák composed his two most famous symphonic works: the Symphony No. 9 (From the New World), which spread his name universally, and his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, one of the most famous of all cello works. Moreover, he wrote his most celebrated American String Quartet during this time. At the same time, because of his growing recognition in Europe and his homesickness for his own country, he left to return to Bohemia in 1895.

Composed by Claude Debussy. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Chamber,Historic,Romantic Period,Standards. Score and part. 19 pages. Jmsgu3 #1053807. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1476293).

Composed in 1890, Rêverie is one of Debussy's earlier works, showcasing his evolving style and paving the way for his later, more mature compositions. The title Rêverie refers to a dreamlike state, and the piece is known for its calm, peaceful, and atmospheric qualities, making it a perfect entry point into Debussy's style. Rêverie is often considered a symbol of the Impressionism musical movement, featuring subtle, dreamy emotions that capture the essence of this artistic style.

The vibrant and dreamy nature of Rêverie has made it a popular choice for various multimedia, including films, commercials, and piano recitals, solidifying its iconic status as a piece of the piano repertoire. The music of Rêverie overwhelms and transports the listener to a dreamlike state, creating a personal and romantic experience open to individual interpretation. Debussy's ability to create a dreamlike atmosphere through the music, with a gently repetitive theme that evolves into richer textures, showcases his mastery in crafting captivating musical landscapes.

By Barry Manilow. By Bruce Johnston. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Contemporary,Rock. Score and part. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3486239. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549331).

Duration: ca. 3:00, score: 5 pages, solo part: 1 page, piano part: 2 pages.Very famous song suitable for church, recital or nightclub. I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and made famous by Barry Manilow. Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976[2] after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975.[3] It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977.[3] Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976.[4]

The original version was recorded by The Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with The Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album, Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by then teen-idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Bruce Johnston. Cassidy's version reached #11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year.[5]

Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God,[2] and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in all of us. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson.[6]

Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Wikipedia

Composed by Franz Schubert. Arranged by James M. Guthrie. 19th Century,Christian,Christmas,Holiday,Religious. Score and part. 10 pages. Jmsgu3 #912218. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.1324027).

Schubert's Ave Maria is one of his most cherished and financially successful works. Although not initially intended for liturgical purposes, it has found tremendous acceptance and popularity among Roman Catholics, particularly in Latin. The melody's brilliance and ingenious composition have captivated listeners, as evidenced by Schubert's statement to his father. Despite its widespread use as a prayer, Schubert's Ave Maria was not written with religious practices or the Catholic church in mind.

Schubert's Ave Maria has been widely used in popular culture. It is often performed and recorded by many singers under the title Ave Maria in musically simplified arrangements and with various lyrics that commonly differ from the original context of the poem. The melody has been used in the film Fantasia and has appeared in TV shows from Supernatural to Community to Bob’s Burgers. It was also performed at John F. Kennedy’s funeral and has been used in the soundtrack of The Batman.

Composed by Wade. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3388105. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548510).

O Come All Ye Faithful arranged with new harmony for the final verse. Score: 3 pages, part: 1 page. Clarinet in Bb.

O Come, All Ye Faithful

O Come, All Ye Faithful is an English translation of the Latin Christmas carol Adeste Fideles. No one knows exactly who wrote it. One theory holds that King John IV of Portugal (1604–1656) wrote it. Another theory says John F. Wade or John Reading wrote it. Nowadays, we usually attribute it to John Wade. Seems like the oldest manuscript from 1751, is owned by Stonyhurst College in Lancashire.

Lyrics

The English translation O Come, All Ye Faithful was certainly written by Frederick Oakeley, a Catholic priest in 1841. This translation is probably the most common in the English speaking states. To begin with, the hymn had only four verses. Later, the verses grew to eight. Music directors often cut various verses because otherwise, the song goes too long. Some believe that St. Bonaventure wrote the first Latin lyrics. Others hold that King John IV of Portugal is responsible. Yet even others think the Cistercian monks wrote them.

King John IV

King John IV of Portugal was called The Musician King. He became king in 1640. In addition to performing the duties of a king, he was also a composer and music journalist. King John built a very large music library. Unfortunately, the library was ruined in 1755 because of the massive earthquake of Lisbon. In addition to building his library, the king started a Music School that produced many accomplished musicians. The king also worked diligently to get instrumental music approved by the Vatican for use in his churches. Aside from his authorship of Adeste Fideles, he is famous for another popular choral setting of the Crux Fidelis, a prevalent Lenten hymn.

Performance in Context

Verses are sometimes left out because all eight verses would take too long to perform. More to the point though, some of the verses may be unsuitable for whatever of the church calendar they are intended. The eighth verse deals with the Epiphany, so it makes sense to sing this on Epiphany Sunday, but not other Sundays. Similarly, other verses are used according to whether the event is Midnight Mass or regular daytime Mass.
