Paul-Agricole Génin was born on 14th February 1832, in Avignon; died 22nd December 1903, in Paris, France. His is often confused with Pierre Génin, who was a flutist who performed mainly in England during the early 20th century.Génin was the Principal flute of the Theatre Italien in Paris, and of the Colonne Orchestra. In addition to writing many works for the flute (he wrote over 60 works for this instrument, he was also one of the first composers to write for the saxophone. He was an Officier de l’Académie des Beaux-ArtsThis work was first published by Richault with two other pieces (Mélodie avec Variation, Opus 63 and Cantilène, Opus 64) as Three character pieces, although the three works were sold seperately. The piano part for all three versions (for alto saxophone, Bb Clarinet or Bb cornet) remains the same.

It is a great piece. The beautiful clarinet melodies are supported by extremely sensitive piano harmonies, creating a deeply nostalgic effect. This nostalgic feeling is mixed to a great tension, developed by the dynamic and harmonic climactic context.I am very glad to have been introduced by a student of mine to this great piece and also to take it into my own repertoire.I am sure this piece is very useful for clarinet students in learning to play with an expressive style. As a personal choice, I will play M° Lorenzini’s Elegia as an encore piece after a long recital.François Benda

His father Jakob, a schoolmaster, was his first music teacher. Later, in Vienna, he had violin, piano and singing lessons. Mozart’s friend, Joseph Eybler taught him composition. In 1828 Niccolò Paganini noticed Panny and took him along on concert tours. In the following years, Penny went to Germany and settled in Mainz. He went on concert tours to different countries and founded a music school. He wrote an opera, a requiem, masses, cantatas, numerous songs and chamber music pieces. The Rondeau is an arrangement of the original ‘Rondo pour le pianoforte‘, published by Pennauer in Vienna in 1829. It was arranged for clarinet and piano by Andreas Johann Lorenz Oechsner (violinist and composer born 1815 in Mainz, died 1886 in Le Havre).
