I wanted to make the implied harmony of a single line gradually more explicit as other lines 'sprouted' from it. And I was seeking new ways to express rhythms which would be both more complex than those in my earlier pieces, but simpler for the musicians to perform. The result was that the surface of Aspen Duet consists, for the most part, simply of sixteenth notes, the complexity coming from the changing ratio of phrase lengths heard simultaneously.
