In need of a short, fun, and exciting encore piece, this little ‘ear-worm’ was composed for the Assai Quartet (flute, violin, guitar, and bassoon) by Kara Williams in 2022. Based in the Riverina Region of New South Wales, Australia, the Assai Quartet also recorded this work on the album ‘Origin’.  Loosely translating as ‘We’re Finished!’ Hemos Acabado channels the energy and style of Latin-American music and has been re-orchestrated for upper-intermediate to more advanced Clarinet soloist (including easier ossia sections) and Piano by the composer. At just under two minutes Hemos Acabado is a fantastic tornado of semiquaver passages grounded by a comforting and toe tappingly recurring rhythmic motif: a great inclusion any program - and not just at the end!

Suite in Sea is a fun and quirky work for solo clarinet and piano composed by Kara Williams. Each movement draws on inspiration from Kara’s own time at sea serving in the military imagined as a suite of four short programmatic movements.
 
We follow a young sailor as they stagger around the deck in the rough weather, finally succumbing to the corkscrew motion of the ocean in ‘Sea Sick Shanty’; a moment of peace and beauty for the young sailor as the ship sails through an ‘Archipelago’ teaming with marine life; In ‘Brew Time March, the young sailor excitedly hears the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee and sit on the bow to watch the waves… lost in thoughts, they unexpectedly hear the sound of work recommencing, and scurry back, making it just in the nick of time… waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time! The preparation, spectacle, pride, and excitement of ‘Sailing into Harbour’ completes this suite, suitable for an intermediate to more advanced player looking for something entertaining and a little bit different!

Three Tangos for Bb Clarinet and Piano (2017) (score & parts)Tango No. 1 is dedicated to Malgosia and her newborn. I imagined a mother, with a child in her arms, dancing to the rhythm of this tango. Tango No. 2 is for Diana, a poet and a believer in sci-art quantum physics of the everyday. It is a slow and somber dance with the universe. Tango No. 3 was inspired by Amanda, the mother character in The Glass Menagerie.   The music, like her memory, is surreal and fantastic.
