Duration: between 11 - 15 min., 18 pp. Description: (According to the composer) In the clarinet/piano piece New Scrabble (1989) pungent words were selected for their strong associations and startling juxtapositions. These were derived in concert with the music that describes them, as an exercise in the force of negative space and dissociative/re-associative poetry. The arrangement of these words that the music describes represents a fixed manifestation of an open form experience, that involves a constant play between association and disassociation, even alienation. The music was written during a period of exploration into the aesthetics of silence, Japanese Zen gardens and line drawings, calligraphy, and Chinese poetry -- transplanted to the soil of my Euro-centric-American upbringing. This arrangement comes from the piano repertoire. It is the second movement of the second sonatina from a set of six listed as Op. 36 dated from 1797. It was originally in G major and is transposed to A flat major to facilitate performance for the advancing clarinetist. I have named this series of publications – Just the Notes, simply because that’s all you get. No dynamics, bowings, phrasings, fingerings, etc. This simplifies your editing. There is not a need to erase from the original, or even worse, try to write over the original print. Also, to save you money movements are sold individually. No need to purchase a multi-movement work when your only desire is to perform only one.

An exciting concert piece inspired by U.S. WW2 pilot, John Gillespie Magee’s iconic poem ‘High Flight.’ In the opening he describes the the magnificent and exhilarating sensation of flying. In the more contemplative second section he seems to breach the veil between earth and heaven: 

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung

My eager craft through footless halls of air ....
Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark nor ever eagle flew—
And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.
