Composed by Darian Stavans. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Score and part. 16 pages. Music Studio #4321767. Published by Music Studio (A0.994716).

Fantasia for Clarinet and Piano.
Fantasia for Clarinet and Piano is part of my album Modern Chamber Music Vol. 1 by Darian Stavans.
Modern Chamber Music Vol. 1 is an academic proposal and a personal perspective of the times we live in. The compilation in this album includes works for small ensembles, duets for instruments like the clarinet and piano that establish metaphorical dialogs with each other in the Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, as well as in the fantasia for the same instruments. Later we encounter a watery flow of deliciously fresh notes in the String Trio, a Neo-romantic piece. The album concludes with a Chamber Concert for Piano in three parts that exalts the old and classical manner of writing piano concerts. In this case, however, there are modern strokes and tonalities adorning this mix of textures and forms.  It is an academic conception in itself that brings remarkably fresh sounds to our day.

Lady Gaga - for Brass?!! Really??

This is a great song and works really well as an instrumental solo for brass instruments. It comes from the 2018 remake of the film 'A Star is Born' and is sung originally by Lady Gaga.

I was asked to do an arrangement of the song for a young lady to sing with Boobs & Brass. I was struck by the quality of the words and the music and immediately thought of it as a great addition to the solo repertoire.

In terms of standard, I would judge this to be around Grades 5 to 6 ABRSM/Trinity and makes for an interesting challenge away from the grading syllabus.

Composed by Johann Pachelbel. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Wedding. Score and part. 8 pages. Jmsgu3 #3386285. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548466).

The famous Pachelbel Canon arranged for clarinet in Bb and piano. Great choice for weddings & receptions!

Pachelbel's Canon

Pachelbel's Canon is, in fact, the traditional title for a composition by the German composer Johann Pachelbel. Other names for the work include namely: Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo, Canon and Gigue in D, and of course Canon in D. We do not know when or why in particular it was written. The oldest copy is surprisingly from the 19th century. It is important to realize that it was a common routine for organists to practice improvisation on the chord progression underlying the canon. Pachelbel originally scored the Canon notably for three violins and continuo. He also in fact paired the Canon with a gigue. The movements are homotonal, to clarify, both are in the key of D major.

History

In due time, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style and remained in virtual oblivion for centuries. The Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra, however, recorded an arrangement of it in 1968. As a result, it gained approval.  Many ensembles began likewise to record the piece in the 1970s and by the 1980s became ubiquitous as background music. From the 1970s to the early 2000s, pop songs correspondingly used elements of the piece. The chord progression, in particular, was used this way. Also, since the 1980s, it has been not only wildly popular for weddings, but also for funeral ceremonies in the USA and Europe.

Pachelbel Background

Johann Pachelbel (1653 –1706) was a German composer, as well as an organist. He was furthermore instrumental in bringing the south German organ school to its apex. He wrote a large body of music, both sacred and, equally important, secular. In particular, he uniquely helped develop the chorale prelude and fugue. For this, he has, in fact, earned a rightful place in the company of the most significant composers of the mid-Baroque period.

Works

Pachelbel's music was certainly popular. With this in mind, he also consequently had many pupils. His music expressly developed into a model for the south German composers. Nowadays, Pachelbel is most famous particularly for the Canon in D, as well as the F minor Chaconne, the Toccata in E minor, and of course the Hexachordum Apollinis, a set of variations for the keyboard.

Influences

Johann Jakob Froberger and Johann Caspar Kerll were south German composers who significantly influenced Pachelbel. Furthermore, he was especially influenced by Italians such as Frescobaldi and Poglietti. He frequently preferred an articulate, simple contrapuntal style that highlighted clarity. His music is markedly less extravagant and harmonically adventurous than that of Dieterich Buxtehude. However, as a point often overlooked, like Buxtehude, Pachelbel experimented with different instrumental combinations in his chamber music.

Legacy

All in all, Pachelbel was most famous as a composer for the keyboard. He composed over two hundred pieces specifically for the instrument. Pachelbel was also surprisingly a prolific composer of vocal music. All in all, about a hundred vocal works survive, including 40 or so large-scale works. .

Composed by Various. Arranged by David McKeown. Baroque,Concert,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 24 pages. David McKeown #4594689. Published by David McKeown (A0.587626).

The Wedding Album is a collection of four beautiful and timeless wedding favourites, arranged for Solo Clarinet with Piano accompaniment. Whether for that Special Day, for a recital, or for your own entertainment, these arrangements are ideal for players at an intermediate level or higher. The 24-page file includes the piano accompaniments and the separate solo parts at the end.

Ave Maria was written by Franz Schubert in 1825 as the sixth song in his song cycle based on Walter Scott’s poem The Lady of the Lake. It is perhaps the best known of all his melodies, adapted for piano by Franz Liszt, and for orchestra many times since. It is often sung with the Latin lyrics of the Catholic hymn of the same name and has been heard everywhere from the Disney movie Fantasia to the funeral of J.F. Kennedy

The Bridal March was written by Richard Wagner in 1850, scored for orchestra and chorus, and opening the third act of his opera, Lohingren. It is best known in the English-speaking world as Here Comes the Bride. Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, and its popularity has endured ever since.

The Prince of Denmark’s March is better known nowadays as the Trumpet Voluntary and is often used in wedding ceremoniesIt was in fact written for organ, with the melody played on thetrumpet stop.  Written around 1700, for many years this piece was mistakenly attributed to Henry Purcell. Only recently has it been established that the composer was Jeremiah Clarke, organist at St Paul’s Cathedral. It is somewhat ironic that this composer of a wedding mainstay was himself a victim of unrequited love. He consequently shot himself in the cathedral graveyard.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Wedding March was originally written in 1842 as incidental music to Shakespeare’s famousplay, Midsummer Night’s Dream. When Queen Victoria’s daughter used the music for her marriage in 1858, it became instantly popular and has remained a wedding favourite ever since.

These four arrangements are also available as single titles for $3.99 each. You can find these along with many more top quality arrangements and compositions by David McKeown at http://www.sheetmusicplus.com/publishers/david-mckeown/6203

Composed by Mykola Leontovich. Arranged by Lori Archer Sutherland. Christmas,Folk,Holiday,Multicultural,World. Score and part. 6 pages. Lori Archer Sutherland #4805099. Published by Lori Archer Sutherland (A0.765011).

For Bb clarinet and piano

Originally derived from a Ukranian folk tune, Mykola Leontovich composed Shchedryk for choir in 1916. It depicts a swallow arriving to tell the household of the arrival of spring and good fortune for the next year. The original folk song was often sung as a well-wishing song at the new year (January 13th on the Julian calendar). The song is often referred to as the Ukranian Bell Carol.

After the song was performed in the United States in 1921, a prominent choir director wrote new lyrics that reflected a Christmas scene, inspired by tones sounding like bells in the song. That version (Carol of the Bells) has remained popular in the U.S.

Composed by Ruggiero Leoncavallo. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. 19th Century,Romantic Period. Score and part. 10 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #1075149. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1499100).

When Leoncavallo’s beautiful solo piece Brise de Mer (“Sea Breeze”) was first published in Berlin in 1906, he was already an established opera composer, largely due to his first opera Pagliacci, which had become an international success. An Impromptu is an informal piece usually for solo instrument. This French word can be translated loosely as “off-hand” and it’s used to describe relatively short pieces which sometimes have a partly improvised style, a simple structure and an emphasis on melody. Piano pieces entitled Impromptu first appeared in the early 19th century and remained popular for decades.

This is a simplified edition of the piece and about ABRSM Clarinet grade 6 - 7 standard (UK). The work has been transposed down to concert E flat major (written F major) from the original. The clarinet part retains the phrasing of the original cello part. The music uses almost the entire clarinet range from low written E to top F above the staff, though this note occurs only once in the piece. The piano part has been simplified by reducing the number of notes in many of the chords, especially those played by the left hand. This is a lovely piece which deserves to be heard more often, with its lyrical melody, elegant changes of harmony and contrasting moods. It would make an excellent item for a clarinet recital. The piece runs for four minutes.

From the Idyll At Twilight. Composed by Zdenek Fibich. Arranged by Wolfgang Birtel. This edition: Sheet music. Edition Schott - Single Edition. Downloadable. Op. 39. Schott Music - Digital #Q15285. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q15285).

The reputation of the Bohemian composer Zdenek Fibich (1850-1900) has always been somewhat overshadowed by that of Bedrich Smetana and Antonín Dvorák. This is a pity, for Fibich, though he died young, made an equally important contribution to the emerging Czech national styl with his wide range of compositions. After starting piano lessons with his mother as his first teacher, the boy went on to music school in Prague and then to the Leipzig Conservatoire, where he learned his craft as a composer. He spent a few months teaching piano in Paris and then continued his studies with Vinzenz Lachner in Mannheim. Prague was eventually to become the centre for Fibich's musical activities: as his dream of a post at the Conservatoire remained unfulfilled, his main employment was giving private music lessons and as a composer Zdenek Fibich wrote works for many musical genres: vocal and chamber music, piano pieces and orchestral works, operas, stage music and melodramas, literary recitals with orchestral accompaniment to which he gave a new lease of life. There are biographical traces to be found in the 376 piano pieces of the collection 'Moods, Impressions and Reminiscences' Op. 41, written in 1892-98: this tells of his love for his pupil Anezka Schulzová in the form of a 'piano diary'. Its four volumes were frequently a source of material for other works, such as the symphonic poem 'In the Evening' Op. 39 (also known as 'A Summer's Evening' and 'At Twilight'), written in 1893. For his second subject in this 'Idyll' Fibich used the minature no. 139, entitled 'Lento', from his collection of piano pieces. The violinst Jan Kubelík played the melody from 1908 onwards with the title 'Poème', and the work is still known today under this title: its easy charm has made it a favourite tune in the classical repertoire. This arrangement is based on the orchestral version from which other material was adapted for the Prelude.

Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by David McKeown. Classical,Concert,Romantic Period,Standards,Wedding. Score and part. 9 pages. David McKeown #4403642. Published by David McKeown (A0.587603).

This version is arranged for Solo Clarinet and Piano and the performance time is around three and a half minutes. Of course, performers, especially at weddings, may wish to abridge and shorten the arrangement. This is easily done as the different sections are self-contained and interchangeable. Repeats may also be ignored. Both the full length youtube performance and the short audio sample are from the Clarinet version off this arrangement.

The solo part is intermediate level, while the piano accompaniment suits an advanced intermediate player. Both will find this ideal for formal and informal performances, with both parts enjoying melodic interest.

Teachers will enjoy using this arrangement as a fun way to help with building dynamic range and stamina.
