History: Connacht (previously spelt as Connaught by the British) is one of the five old provinces of Ireland (the others are Ulster, Leinster, Meath, and Munster). The province gets its name from the Connacht, a medieval ruling dynasty. Connacht means ‘descendants of Conn’, referring to Conn Cétchathach of the Hundred Battles.

'Donnybrook Fair' is a lively Irish jig that's great fun to play. It's well-known and loved and is played across the world in pubs, on stage and at Irish music sessions. It is a great jig for beginners and experts alike.

History: The title of this jig refers to the fair of the same name that was held in Donnybrook, Dublin. The fair was held from the 13th century up until the 1850’s and is also a slang term for a brawl or riot. In 1204, a license was granted to the corporation of Dublin by King John of England to hold an annual eight-day fair in Donnybrook. In 1252, the duration of the fair was extended to fifteen days. Over the subsequent centuries, the terms of holding the fair continued to change until it was decided in the 18th century that the fair would be held on the 26th of August on Donnybrook Green for a full fortnight. The fair was finally ended in 1855 when ‘The Committee for the Abolition of Donnybrook Fair’ bought the licence to the fair for £3000.

History: Tulla is a market town in County Clare, Ireland. The name is usually translated as Tulach na nAspal (hill of the apostles) or Tulach na nEaspag (hill of the bishops), most likely as Tulla grew up around a monastery founded in the 7th century by Mochulla who is now the Patron Saint of Tulla. This reel was popularised by Joe Cooley who recorded it in 1975 as a part of a set that also included The Skylark and Roaring Mary.

History: ‘The Lark in the Morning’ is considered to be a variant of the jig ‘Hills of Glenorchy’. The tune is highly popular and has been widely performed. It has also been associated with a variety of titles over the 19th and 20th centuries, with ‘The Lark in the Morning’ finally being settled on in the latter half of the 20th century. The tune can be heard in the mid-1990’s film ‘The Devil's Own’ during the house-party scene in honour of Tom O’Meara’s (played by Harrison Ford) daughter's confirmation.

History: This melody was originally published by James Goodman in the mid-19th century as Top of the Cliff. Throughout his life, James Goodman collected more than 2000 traditional tunes, a number of which were believed to have been lost to time. He played both the flute and the uilleann pipes and was a cleric and a Professor of Irish.

History: ‘The Maid Behind the Bar’ is one of the most popular Irish tunes in modern sessions. ‘The Maid Behind the Bar’ first appeared in print under the name ‘Judy’s Reel’ in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection published in 1882 in Boston. The tune also appeared as ‘The Green Mountains’ in O’Neill’s Music of Ireland (1903). ‘The Maid Behind the Bar’ was a favourite dance tune in the US after it was brought over from Ireland by refugees from The Great Irish Famine. Piper Tom Ennis and Sligo fiddler James Morrison popularised the tune when they recorded it in 1922.

History: This reel was first recorded in 1915 by Brooklyn accordion player John Kimmell. Another version of this tune, titled Gigue à Tit noir was first recorded by Isidore Soucy in Montreal in 1929. This reel has been particularly popular. with versions of it being played in Ireland, the British Isles and North America.

History: The Cliffs of Moher are a series of sea cliffs in the Burren region of County Clare, Ireland. The cliffs are named after an old promontory fort known as Morthar or Moher that was positioned at the southernmost point of the coastline. The fort was demolished in 1808 to provide material for a new lookout tower to provide warning of a French invasion during the Napoleonic wars. The cliffs are now one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, with over one and half million people visiting annually.

'Blarney Pilgrim' is a lively Irish jig that's great fun to play. It's well-known and loved and is played across the world in pubs, on stage and at Irish music sessions. It is a great jig for beginners and experts alike.

History: This jig’s title refers to those who visit The Blarney Stone, a piece of limestone built into the walls of Blarney Castle, near Cork, Ireland. Kissing the stone is said to endow the kisser with great eloquence. According to legend, Cormac Laidir MacCarthy (the builder of Blarney Castle), appealed to the Irish goddess Clíodhna for assistance with a lawsuit. She told MacCarthy to kiss the first stone he saw on his way to the courthouse, which he did. MacCarthy then plead his case with great eloquence and won. Thus, The Blarney Stone is said to impart the ability to deceive without offending. More recently, in the film ‘Titanic’, ‘The Blarney Pilgrim’ is performed by the band, Gaelic Storm.
