Kissing the stone is said to endow the kisser with great eloquence. According to legend, Cormac Laidir MacCarthy (the builder of Blarney Castle), appealed to the Irish goddess ClÃodhna for assistance with a lawsuit. She told MacCarthy to kiss the first stone he saw on his way to the courthouse, which he did. MacCarthy then plead his case with great eloquence and won. Thus, The Blarney Stone is said to impart the ability to deceive without offending.
