Tuneful Tales is a new collection of 14 pieces from the UK composer and educator Edmund Hartzell. 

This edition is for two same flutes and the book consists of main book: flute 1 (top part in duet layout) and separate pull out part for flute 2 (bottom part in duet layout). 

These magical miniatures are varied and eclectic and really help fire the imagination of players and teachers alike. 

The pieces are suitable for beginner to intermediate players (c.grades 1-4 UK) and make a wonderful addition to teaching and concert repertoire for adults and children alike. They are also good preparation for exam pieces and can be used as 'own choice' exam pieces with certain exam boards (subject to difficulty level and length parameters). 

Players are encouraged to expand on the stories to make the most of the performance aspects of each piece/tale.

This arrangement of Railway Song is one of a series of jolly and descriptive quartets (and a septet) all based on the Swabian folksong Auf de schwäb'sche Eisebahne (= on the Swabian railway) from the Tübinger Kommersbuch 1853 The music in this arrangement also mimics the speeding up and slowing down of the train and its whistles. Composed for the Earl of Abingdon London during the 1760s, this trio was written for a pair of flutes and cello or viola da gamba. Abel would have played the gamba part. It was the first of four trios which were afterwards published and sold by John Preston at his music Warehouse. This would have been an additional source of income for Abel. When the trios were played at the musical gatherings of John Preston's customers the parts would be played on whatever instruments were available, the flute parts on oboes, violins or even clarinets which were then pitched in C. A bassoon might be substituted for the cello . With versatility in mind I have included alternative parts: for clarinet in Bb in lieu of flute 2; clarinet in Bb or Bass clarinet in lieu of cello. All parts are well within the abilities of players of about grade 6 ABRSM.

Boivin was also Michel Blavet’s publisher and the flute duets and sonatas credited to Blavet have publication dates and opus numbers and his full name and the dedication details. The musical style of the 6 sonatas is characteristic of Blavet rather than Handel and none of the thematic material from these sonatas seems to have been re-used by Handel - whose borrowings from his own works are numerous and well documented.

There are 4 movements for 2 equal players of Intermediate standard, Affettuoso, Allegro, Dolce & Vivace.

They are also suitable for pairs of oboes or clarinets or violins. They have been very lightly edited,

The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere.  A copy of the Privilége du Roy.  granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page.

Each sonata has 4 or 5 movements in the same key alternating slow and fast and is written for players of equal ability. Teachers will find them useful for developing independent part playing in players of intermediate ability.

The sonatas are also suitable for pairs of oboes or violins - or possibly clarinets.
