Piper Publications #4321469. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811701). SONATA No. 1 in A MAJOR SONATA No. 2 in E MINOR SONATA No. 3 in D MAJOR The six opus 8 sonatas were published in Paris in 1725 for ‘deux Flûtes-Transversiere sans Basse’. They were published ‘Avec Privilége du Roy.’ They were printed as a playing score preceeded by a title page which also gave details of where to obtain copies - L’Auter, Le Sr. Boivin & Le Sr. Le Clere.  A copy of the Privilége du Roy.  granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page. Each sonata has 4 or 5 movements in the same key alternating slow and fast and is written for players of equal ability. Teachers will find them useful for developing independent part playing in players of intermediate ability. The sonatas are also suitable for pairs of oboes or violins - or possibly clarinets.

Small Ensemble Bassoon,Flute,Oboe,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811712 Composed by GIUSEPPE SAMMARTINI (1695 - 1750). Arranged by Edited by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert. Score and parts. 24 pages. Piper Publications #4983087. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811712). This is the first of ‘VI SONATE A TRE Due Flauti col Basso’  by ‘Giuseppe San Martini  Milanese’ published in Paris as his ‘Opera Prima’ (opus 1)* by Le Clerc and Boivin ‘avec privilege du Roi’ in 1736. Giuseppe’s surname varied progressively during his life from St. Martini via San Martini to Giuseppe Sammartini. The basso part would have been played on a cello or bassoon probably with the addition of a harpsichord filling out the harmony according to the figured bass. The trio works well with three players of intermediate ability or above. One or both flute parts can be played on oboe(s) or violin(s) and this would certainly have happened in the households of the wealthy amateurs who purchased the first edition.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1428140 Composed by JOHANN JOACHIM QUANTZ (1697 - 1763). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Chamber,Classical,Contest,Festival. Score. 32 pages. Piper Publications #1008926. Published by Piper Publications (A0.1428140). The last of a set of 6 Duettos Opus 2 which Quantz composed for his pupil king Frederick the great of Prussia. It would seem that these Duettos were composed over a longer period of time than would be expected by the opus number as they clearly indicate the pupil's progressive as a player and Quantz's development as a composer. The date of publication (1759, just 4 years before Quantz's death) and addition of the alternative suitability for violins indicates that a collection  of the Duettos was intended to maximise sales. The movements, Grave in alla breve time leading to Alla Breve, ma Presto, Cantabile and Più Tosto Vivace are the most demanding of the six Duettos. The last movement is a canon, the second part following the first exactly at a distance of two bars/measures for 143 bars/measures plus repeat, with a short Conclusione in the fashion of a coda. The last Duetto of the set is suitable for players of advanced intermediate standard.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811699 Composed by Jean Baptiste Loeillet of Gant (1688 - 1720). Arranged by Edited by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,Standards. Score. 52 pages. Piper Publications #4301913. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811699). The first 3 of 6 sonatas. originally for recorder and keyboard, fitted and contrived for 2 flutes compos'd by Mr. Loeillet of Gant. Published in London by John Walsh, who was also the publisher of John Loeillet of London. The two Loeillets were first cousins and both confusingly, had started out as Jean Baptiste Loeillet. It is not absolutely clear who did the fitting and contriving, but the sonatas are clearly and rightly attributed to Loeillet of Gant. The Sonatas are in A minor, G major & F major and 'contrived' for players of equal ability. .

Flute Duet Flute - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1090562 Composed by François Devienne (1759 - 1803). Arranged by Pat Spence. Classical,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score. 52 pages. Piper Publications #694746. Published by Piper Publications (A0.1090562). Described on the title page when first published in Paris as “Douze Petits Duos facile d’éxécution, Pour deux Flûtes DÉDIÉS à M. Auguste de la Grange COMPOSÉS Par F. DEVIENNEâ€. Neither the date of composition nor that of the first publication are known but the latter would have been during Devienne’s lifetime. Each Duet has two movements and the set of twelve is gently progressive for both parts making part swapping between pupils or pupil and teacher an enjoyable option. The only dynamics indicated are in Duo 9 and I have refrained from adding more as the possibilities are numerous and players will enjoy experimenting for themselves. In editing these duets I have corrected obvious copying mistakes without comment. All editings are indicated either in parentheses ( ) or dashed lines. In the first bar/measure of the Grazioso movement of Duo 4 I have shown the way the turns (grupettos) should be played and continued using the grupetto sign. The layout of the duets avoids page turns during movements except for the last movement of no. 12 which is too long. A nifty page turn from flute 2 should solve this small dilemma.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811711 Composed by Giuseppi Sammartini (1695 - 1750). Arranged by Edited by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Instructional,Standards. Score. 20 pages. Piper Publications #4897105. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811711). These are the first three of Sammartini’s SIX SONATAS OR DUETS for two German flutes Compos’d for the Temple of Apollo published by James Oswald and sold at his music shop in St. Martin’s Church Yard in the Strand London shortly after October 1747. The title page is followed by a copy of the permission of George the Second King of Great Britain, France and Ireland to print and publish two operas of Vocal and Instrumental Music intitled (sic), The Temple of Apollo which he has composed and employed others to compose, for a period of fourteen years.Sonatas 1 & 2 have three movements, No. 3 has four: No. 1 in D major - Andante, Allegro & AllegroNo. 2 in E minor - Andante, Allegro & Minuet & TrioNo. 3 in A major - Spiritoso, Allegro, Andantino & MinuetThe parts are of equal difficulty and move independently. Players of intermediate ability and above will enjoy these. The format is a playing score with no page turns during the movements.N.B. These Sonatas are completely different sonatas from the VI SONATE A TRE for 2 flutes & basso published by Boivin in Paris in 1740 which, confusingly were also described as 'opera 1'.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.811771 Composed by Robert Valentine (1671 - 1747). Arranged by Edited by Pat Spence. Baroque,Concert,Graduation,Standards,Wedding. Score. 22 pages. Piper Publications #6096735. Published by Piper Publications (A0.811771). The set of 6 sonatas for two flutes were first published by John Walsh in London, a clear indication that Robert enjoyed a Europe wide reputation as a composer and performer. They are in the Baroque style written for two equal players of intermediate ability. The dynamic markings are few as the custom of contrasting dynamics on repeated sections was well known. The dynamics in parentheses ( ) are suggestions only as are the dashed phrasings. The original publication was of separate part books. The repeated sections were only indicated in part two which probably caused some initial confusion! The current edition is in playing score format. The sonatas are also suitable for pairs of oboes or violins.

Flute Duet - Intermediate - Digital Download SKU: F2.FM119 Composed by Max Reger. Arranged by Robert Rainford. Score. 14 pages. Forton Music - Digital #FM119. Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM119). ISBN 9790570480180.Two duets by Reger, arranged for two flutes. The first movement is a compete canon, with the second player entering after half a bar. The second duet has a similar feel but is more fugal, with the second part being more independant of the first. This contrapuntal texture gives the music a Baroque feel, but the wide ranging keys, multiple time changes and dramatic dynamics add a more Romantic dimension to the pieces. Fairly short pieces (about 40 bars and about 50 bars) but marked at Vivace and Allegro con spirito, these are around grade7-8 standard.

Flute Duet Flute - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1423781 Composed by JOHANN JOACHIM QUANTZ (1697 - 1763). Arranged by Pat Spence. Baroque,Chamber,Instructional. Score. 28 pages. Piper Publications #1005020. Published by Piper Publications (A0.1423781). This is the fourth of a set of six Duettos opus 2. All have 3 movements and the style is clearly  moving on from Baroque to early Classical. Allegro, Affetuoso & Presto. Quantz composed the Duettos for his flute pupil Frederick the Great of Prussia. The Duettos are clearly written for players of equal ability and the alternative violins included would have been added on publication in 1759 to maximise sales.
