Published by Piper Publications (A0.811696). *The first of a set of 6 sonatas published in Paris by Boivin  A Deux flutes transversiere sans Basse Par Mr. Handel.  No manuscript has been found and there is no date of publication. Boivin was also Michel Blavet’s publisher and the flute duets and sonatas credited to Blavet have publication dates and opus numbers  and his full name and the dedication details. The musical style of the 6 sonatas is characteristic of Blavet  rather than Handel and none of the thematic material from these sonatas seems to have been re-used by Handel - whose borrowings from his own works are numerous and well documented. They are also suitable for pairs of oboes or clarinets or violins. They have been very lightly edited,  obvious wrong notes have been corrected, a few dynamic and decorative suggestions added in  parentheses ( ) missing slurs added in broken lines (- -). Players of Intermediate standard will enjoy this music written for 2 equal instruments. 4 movements - Larghetto, Allegro, Andante & Allegro.

The most famous Nocturne of all Chopin's arranged here for flute duet and piano.This arrangement has been made simpler by turning it into 3/4 time instead of 12/8- Moving the key signature from E flat to F major. Both instrumental parts are reasonably equal in terms of range (2 octaves) and detail, and I've tried to keep the piano part light and simple for support. The fast melisma type runs in the original have been taken out, and although I have included mordents and trills, these can be optional. I have set it to early intermediate, but the whole score is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Composed for the Earl of Abingdon London during the 1760s, this trio was written for a pair of flutes and cello or viola da gamba. Abel would have played the gamba part. It was the first of four trios which were afterwards published and sold by John Preston at his music Warehouse. This would have been an additional source of income for Abel. When the trios were played at the musical gatherings of John Preston's customers the parts would be played on whatever instruments were available, the flute parts on oboes, violins or even clarinets which were then pitched in C. A bassoon might be substituted for the cello . With versatility in mind I have included alternative parts: for clarinet in Bb in lieu of flute 2; clarinet in Bb or Bass clarinet in lieu of cello. All parts are well within the abilities of players of about grade 6 ABRSM.

This is the first of ‘VI SONATE A TRE Due Flauti col Basso’  by ‘Giuseppe San Martini  Milanese’ published in Paris as his ‘Opera Prima’ (opus 1)* by Le Clerc and Boivin ‘avec privilege du Roi’ in 1736. Giuseppe’s surname varied progressively during his life from St. Martini via San Martini to Giuseppe Sammartini. The basso part would have been played on a cello or bassoon probably with the addition of a harpsichord filling out the harmony according to the figured bass. The trio works well with three players of intermediate ability or above. One or both flute parts can be played on oboe(s) or violin(s) and this would certainly have happened in the households of the wealthy amateurs who purchased the first edition.

Originally intended for two Alto Flutes, this work can be played on two C Flutes, or a C Flute and an Alto Flute.The opening theme is sweet and simple. It becomes more dramatic and tumultuous in the middle section resolving back to it's sweet, yet melancholic theme at the end.
