Thinking of what I would have liked to have played (besides Telemann and Loeillet) as an Intermediate flute player, I've put a collection together beginning with some rather fun jazzy pieces ('A Cat totally ignoring You'; Baker Street Blues, etc); lots of gripping rhythmic pieces: two tangos, Cha-Cha-Charing-Cross Road, SevenEight; and lots of pieces with literary inspiration by Shakespeare, Malory, R.L.Stevenson, Tolkein, Christina Rosetti... expressive and dramatic. I believe this collection will appeal to intermediate flute students of all ages.

As a former very keen flute player (I loved playing in the Singapore Youth Symphony Orchestra, and studied flute for several years at the Mozarteum in Salzburg before concentrating on keyboard instruments) I enjoy writing for the Flute. This collection starts off with 8 pieces using titles of René Magritte's surrealist paintings. The titles, which I found really inspiring, were thought up by Magritte's friend, the surrealist poet Louis Scutenaire: La sens de la nuit; La clef des songes; Les signes du soir, etc. There are 3 pieces inspired by Shakespeare characters: Juliet; Hotspur; Beatrice & Benedick; a few jazzy pieces : London Bridge Rag; We gotta Boogie; My favourite Time of day; and some VERY exciting encore pieces: Tango at 2 a.m., Folies d'Espagne, Rondo alla Tarantella...

Aire Triste Play this as tragically as you can! This is a very ‘dark’ romantic piece: the only ray of light is in the middle section beginning in bar 17. But even here, the descending chromatic notes in bars 20 and 23 make sure it remains sad.

In a Rock’n’Roll Mood This is in the style of rock’n’roll from the 1950’s. The first eight bars are with ‘swung’ quavers/eighths (DOO – bee – DOO – bee - DOO) but watch out!: the ‘middle eight’ bars are with ‘straight’ quavers/eighths (da – da – da – da)!

Don Juan Boogie Teehee. I have been REALLY cheeky here, taking the theme from the Minuet in Mozart’s opera ‘Don Giovanni’ and making it into a Boogie! After the very free introduction in which the flute and piano imitate each other, the boogie begins. Bring out the syncopations as much as you can, for example the last note in bar 4, or the first C# in bar 9.

Dancing in the Spring This isn't  a ‘proper’ dance, like a waltz, but just a kind of joyous skipping and hopping because winter is over and spring is here!
